Do you have to stop running once your pregnant?

I'm 6 weeks pregnant. I've stopped running since I found out because I just didn't know if it was okay or not. I still get a lot of exercise walking all over the hospital all day at my job, but I didn't know if I could still run my 4 miles a day or for how long into the pregnancy I could do it. Anyone have a clue?

I have 2 book recomendations.  I ran & cycled through 2 pregnancies and had a great time!

i agree with the above statement esp about the weight gain and being active. there were people around me who gave me grief about both and i said that my DR was ok with what i was doing!!!

Ditto on the above.  I ran until 2 weeks before delivery (when I felt like I had slowed to an almost-walk and couldn't take the bouncing any more!), and did a 5K at 8 mos.  I had natural childbirth, and think my body was better prepared b/c of keeping my fitness up.  Definitely listen to your body & OB/midwife.  And don't let anyone give you guff about how much or little weight you gain -- because I had a very active pregnancy (I'm also a landscaper by profession), the nurses were after me to gain more weight, and in the end, my weight & the baby's were totally average.

i agree with the other posts especially that working out during pregnancy helps with labor!! good luck and just listen to your body!

I was about half way through my marathon training plan when I found out I was pregnant. My doctor also said running was fine because I ran so much prior to being pregnant, so I ran until I was 34 weeks pregnant. I didn't end up running the marathon and cut back on my running a good bit, but I was fine the entire time. Oh, and I had a wonderful brace that I wore when my round ligaments started to bother me. Good luck!

I ran all the way through my pregnancies and I have two beautiful, normal and healthy girls!! BTW, my labor and birth were a piece of cake because I was so fit.

I never stopped throughout my entire pregnancy. I got alot slower and I always went out early in the morning before it got to hot. I got myself a belly support belt to wear also. I never ran more than 4 miles at a time. I participated in a couple of 5Ks as well. I guess whatever your body can tolerate as long as your doctor is okay with it. I had a great doctor who let me keep doing what I always had done. She made sure that I knew exactly what was going on with my body also and to stop if anything out of the norm occurred. Hope this helps.

My husband is an OBGYN, and he says that you can do it as long as you were doing it before you were pregnant (but don't overdo it if you don't have the energy). Basically, he says you shouldn't take up any new strenuous activity while you're pregnant. (But I completely stopped because I had no energy for it.)

I ran with both pregnacies-up to month 8- had to jog/walk. Eventually you start to feel the belly tighten up if it is too much, and then just slow down/walk. As long as you were a runner before- no problem. My doctor didn't seem to think it was a problem.

My doctor told me that if I was running up until I got pregnant that I could continue as long as I was conscious of how my body felt. Hope you keep running! :)

I would always check with your doctor...but mine told me that as long as I was running prior to getting pregnant (not starting new exercise)..running is just fine. I ran through month 4 or 5. Good luck

Some Moms have run in Marathons at 8 months. But I would check with your doctor to be sure it's okay.
