I've been enjoying running ever since Nursing school. Now I'm training for a 1/2 Marathon event in Ottawa. I would like to know what to eat after my loooooooong runs on Sundays. I feel sooo tired afterwards and I'm just looking for something that will keep me perky and motivated for the rest of the day. What do you eat? Help!!!!!!

Here's something I have been eating after a long run and also sometimes for breakfast - bagel (either an everything bagel or multi-grain), toasted, with between 1-2 Tbsp peanut butter and a cut up banana on top. When I have it for breakfast it keeps me from snacking before lunch.

I had this same issue as I have just started training for a 1/2 marathon as well. I went to Runnersworld.com and they have articles and videos on this issue that I found really helpful. They have suggestions on the types of foods that are good, but really emphasize a combination of the right carbs and protein to help replenish your body and help your muscles restore. I actually just read an article last week that broke it down by run - such as a 3 miler you don't need to refuel as much, but anything over 60 minutes you really need to have something with electrolytes soon after and a combo of carbs & protein within an hour after your run. Fiber is also key in your carbs.

Quoting Amanda:

We always make a smoothie after a long run. Thrive Fitness or the Thrive Diet books have some great and very nutritious post-run snacks and smoothies.

Great minds think alike!  I've been reading about smoothies.  I've started having them for breakfast.  A great way to perk me up and get the day starting!!!

Take care!

Quoting Sarah:

I read that a good bran cereal with skim milk is a really good post running snack (I ate weaties today and I feel really good). Lots of water as well, so you can get back all that water you lost when you sweat.

Thank you so much Sarah for the advice.  Will try it in a future long run day!

Happy Trails!

A big bowl of oatmeal with almonds and dried cherries - my addiction! Oats are supposed to have slow release carbs, combine that with the antioxidant cherries and the protein from the milk and almonds - power food. Good luck on the 1/2!
