I have grand-mal seizures and the dr's don't know why yet as the months go on my seizures seem to get worst instead of better. I am trying to work full time but I am having the seizures at work also. Since on generic Keppra 3000mg a day I am loosing my speech as the seizures. The generic is not working for me at all. Does anyone else that this generic version? I am unable to work or move my arms after I have these seizures. I have four boys and it is hard to take care of my family with having these issues.

Heidi,

I have had to switch back to brand name keppra after being on the generic version for one month. I suffer from both petit mal and grand mal seizures, and had the worst grand mal seizure I had ever had due to the switch (I was told it was 7 minutes long and I stopped breathing). My seizures were completely under control while on the brand name. Looking back, my petit mals came back on the generic also, and I was VERY scatterbrained (the day of the grand mal I couldn't focus on anything). My doctor has put me on Keppra XR (extended release, so I only have to take it in the morning) - 1,500 mg of that, plus one 500 mg of regular Keppra in the morning. It is actually twice what I was on before (so I must have been on the bare minimum for me earlier), but I feel much better. I would definitely recommend switching back. I recently spoke to a nurse who works with children with epilepsy, and the 3 she works with who were on Keppra all had their seizures return when they switched to generic. Check if your insurance can let you fight the added expense of staying on name brand, since the generic does not stop your seizure activity. I am trying this route with mine, but don't know if it has worked yet. I have 2 young children of my own, so I know how you feel with needing to take care of them.

I'm on 3500 mg of Keppra a day. I was taking the brand name version until my pharmacy switched to Levitacetram (the generic for Keppra) in December. My neurologist also has me on 200 mg of Lyrica each day, too. I haven't had a grand mal seizure since he added the Lyrica (I'm going on about 9 months now), and my petit mal seizures are so small that I don't even notice them most of the time, so we're hoping this is the right combination. I'm really fortunate that my grand mal seizures are usually only once every few months, but at the same time, it makes it difficult to tell if this is the right combo of meds because they're every few months apart, so we use the frequency and time of the petit mal seizures as a base.

Heidi when you look on your persciption bottle does it say Keppra??
The Generic name for Kappra is Levetiracetam I have been taking it for a year and half now and my neuroligist flipped because they were not giving me the right perscription. When I got on the right persciption my seizures started to decese and about 8 months ago I stopped having my grand mal and drop attacks. Remember this is still a experimental drug. Hope this helps you!!

I am taking the geniric keppra 2000mg a day and have had some problems with it as well. Although it has helped me with controling my seizures better I now only have about one gran-mal a month it has the caused me to be have troubles when recovering from a seizure, I am much more confused, have headaches for several days and much less time before the seizure for me to get help. I used to know at least an hour before if not longer that I was going to have a seizure from either an aora or many small twitches in my hands and arms now if I am lucky I have a few minutes. I am also on 500mg on generic zonegran a day and my doctor says since I have tried virtually every med out there plus the VNS stimulator they are not sure wht to do next. They also say the meds I am on for my seizures are what is causing me the need to be on an antidepresant as well. I am happy I found this site I am so glad to see there are others actually having the same stresses to deal with and hope to make some friends on here...alot of my freinds try to understand but really don't know what it is like knowing what I feel like each time I know one of my children has to see me have a seizure, my 5 year old son feels he has to take care of me and I tell him it should be mommy taking care of him.

Quoting Heidi:

grand-mal seizures worst now that on generic Keppra

Hi Heidi , my name is Bonnie, I am 42 turning 43 in may. I live in surrey b.c., canada.. I got epilepsy @ the age of 13. I was @ a fa,ily friends house and it had gotten late. I told my father we needed to go as I was very tired. This was after a two week trip from ontario driving. Two days later I woke up in the hospital, I had been in a coma and my mother was trying to feed me. For all of my teen years I was embarrassed so I never took my meds.. My seizues only continued to be worst. My Drs. say that is inexplainable, as well as my eeg's coming back normal too. Stress also takes a strong hold to, and it is a strong aura. I am not allowed to work, I've been on so many medications, I hate medicines. Finally the neuroligist put me on a new medicine called  keppra. My prescription bottle says : CO LEVETIRACET AM 500 mg twice daily. It seems to work fine as long as I take it properly. Like for instance : take it 2 on monday,, 1 on tuesday, 2 on wednesday, 2 on thursday, 1 on friday, and 2 on saturday, and 2 on sunday, this will bring on a seizure. I must take everyday 2 a day, or I'll start seizing.. I've had up to 13 in one day.. I started out with absence seizures, and now today I have peti-mal & grand-mal. I also have sudden jerks with my arms & hands when in a relaxed mode. SO FOR ME IT HAS TO DO WITH TAKING ALL MY MEDS, ALL OF THE TIME.. i'VE ALSO ALWAYS HAD THE JERKING MOVEMENTS BEFORE THESE MEDS.. I also have ADHD, DYSLEXIA, CHRONIC ANXIETY DISORDER, ASTHMA, ACID REFLUX, & ULCERS.. I can understand how you feel. I also try to get @ least 6-7 hours of sleep per night as well. I hope this helps.. Oh I have 3 children 21,18,16, as well as I have custody of my 4 year old grandson.. I would be lost without the help of my hubby. My children are very protective of me also, and they've all seen many of my seizures..

hi,

i found keppra made my seizures much worse but i did notice patterns forming. the tiredness convinced me in the end to change meds but only time will tell. I was studying when my seizures worsened and it got so bad i got too behind to finish the course. Its so frustrating and i do feel for you, maybe after time they might settle down, i dont know if you've been taking keppra for long, i only lasted 5 months. like wendy, im here if you want to moan!

Hello Heidi. I'm Wendy. I have epilepsy, too. I am on 3 different kinds of medicines. Keppra, dilantin, and lamictal. I am taking non generic version. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I really feel your pain. I would love to talk with you more and I am here if you need to just vent. ~hugs~
