When I was at wal-mart today they had a sale on sidewalk chalk. You could get 52 colors for $5! As it is really nice here right now I started thinking. We had tons of fun with sidewalk chalk last year. We colored pictures, played hop scotch. It's also a great out side activity to do with littles to let them scribble and help them learn their colors! Plus when you are done you can either leave it to enjoy or spray it off with the hose wait an hour and start over!

I retract my statement, it wasn't painting with chalk perse, it was drawing with wet chalk! NEwayz, here's what you do:

soak chalk in a mixture of 1 cup water to 1/3 cup sugar for 5 to 10 minutes then draw on paper with the wet chalk...try drawing on black paper for added fun!

I got that idea from the book "The Toddler's Busy Book" by Trish Kuffner, here are some other chalk ideas from the same book:

To save chalk pictures spray with hairspray to set the chalk.

run a damp sponge over your paper then color it with chalk

Paint a piece of paper with liquid starch, while it's still wet color it with chalk.

Make chalk rubbings by placing a piece of paper over a textured surface, such as raised greeting cards, textured wall-paper, leaves, change etc etc. Rub chalk over the paper and watch the designs show up on the paper!

Draw on windows with wet chalk, it easily washes off!

You can also make your own chalk with plaster of paris and tempra paint, then put it into mold and let dry. Sorry, we don't have a Walmart for 3 1/2 hrs, so we make our own.

There is a recipe I have somewhere (among my masses of magazine articles and clippings and jotted down notes) about how to soak chalk in a water and sugar solution to make it into a paint or some such thing...I'll see if I can find it, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about...feel free to beat me to it!!!!

I saw that at wal-mart too actually. They had all kinds of crazy side walk chalk stuff. you can get in 3D and all kinds of stuff. We just went with the regular stuff that was on sale. While my kids like stuff like that, they also like to draw!

I just hit that deal up myself! I bought two of them just to be safe!

I saw in a magazine the other day Crayola has a new chalk "toy", you put the chalk in the circle, top looking thing, press down and spins around like crazy leaving cool chalk trails, I don't recall where it's available, but it does look fun!
