Do any of you other moms get a ton of homework for your school aged children?

My daughter will be attending a new school this year. I am very proud of her new school b/c it is the top school in the city; however, they give children so much homework.

They get a lot of homework but they are learning so much. Not only are they learning the academics that the homework supplies but it teaches them time management and gives them self esteem. It's not easy to watch - one of my daughters had almost an hour of homework a night in kindergarten.

Last year my kids were 7th and 8th grade. While my 7th grader could finish his homework in 1-2 hours, my 8th grader had a little more trouble and it took him the entire evening almost every night. They would have homework in atleast 3 subjects every night and even on the weekend.

This is the difference between the old school district we were in and this one... but atleast now my children are receiving an education and getting more out of school than 8 hours a day at a play center.

Yea, we have a lot. We homeschool so it's all "homework" School takes us about 2 hours a day, and we're done. I have two 1st graders and a preschooler.

My kids average 3-4hrs a night they are in 7th and 8th grade. Our schools are ranked 4th in the entire state of NH. So the education is phenomenal. The homework is hard they get off the bus at 4 pm and do 4 hrs of homework. Take a break for dinner and are in bed at 9pm. So I get to basically see my kids 1hr a day M-F 10mo's out of the year.

Mine too!! My kids get on the bus at 655 a.m and get off the bust at 3:55 p.m. they have a very long school day and I like them in bed by 730 because they have to get up soo early. So in a 3 1/2 hour span they have to eat dinner, take a bath, read two books & study spelling words. It is overwhelming to me. We cannot do anything on school days, not even a trip to get some milk!! My son's skills have improved with all this extra work but I feel like we have no family time. On weekends they are sent home with a few books, & usually some sort of project to do. I feel bad for him, it's like going to work, when i get home I just want to relax a bit not do more work!! I am afraid they will get overloaded & end up hating school.

Yeah, we attend one of the top schools in our district, and my kids get lots of homework. We don't have much trouble with my third grader, but my 2 kindergarteners are terrible. It isn't the written work thats so bad, its the reading and trying to learn the sight words. They are on their 4th week and have acumulated 22 words now, and only know a few of them. They add on more every week. My girls weren't able to go to preschool because in our area all the public preschool programs are income based, and I happen to actually have a job, so they didn't get to go. They didn't know their letters before they started, and the sight words seem a little excessive and are proving really hard for the girls to get a grasp of.

Some schools and/or teachers believe that homework really helps the kids. It also is to help boost the SOL socres at the end of the year. But if it is too much for your daughter or there is something/class she has real troubles in make an appt with the teacher and talk out all of your concerns. You can also have a meeting with Teacher, Princpal, and a School board member if that meeting is not satifing for you.
