Hi, I have a beautiful 9 year old daughter who is well behaved most of the time however when she is tired and cranky, WATCH OUT! She is in my face and bellowing at me and she's even started pushing me around. Usually I put her in timeout and then punish her when that's over and done with but I'm getting scared to discipline her because I know what the fall out will be like. Can anyone give me some tips on how to discipline a 9 year old. I don't know if she could be too old for timeout, I have suggested going to her room to chill out but that doesn't address the issue of her misbehaviour. Please help!

Taking away privileges is a good start. Another thing to start on is the discussion about puberty, because you are actively experiencing the onset of that right now.

She's going to have PMS moods, she's going to be defiant, pissy, moody, and downright horrible. Partially because she's got so many changes going on in her physiology that she's a confused little being right now!

So, approach each situation calmly, but keep the reigns of parenthood firmly in your hands. When she acts out, speak with her, find out why she's acting as she is, how she feels at the time, etc...

Patience is good, and picking your battles is good too. And, really, if the mood comes with tired and cranky, can you somehow rearrange things so that you can get her settled before she hits that stage?

Maybe if you take away her iPod/iPad or whatever materialistic thing she values the most at this time in her life, for a week or two and only give it back when her behavior improves. I'm learning as I go with disciplining a 5 year old. It works for me... at the moment... ;0)
