I do not agree! I have two children who have always come straight in sat at the table and completed their homework while it was still fresh to them. I fix them a snack while they pull their homework from the bookbag. Before they start we talk about their day at school. I set the snack in front of them let them get three good bites down and I say ok snack and work. When you are done there is nothing else you have to do tonight. You have all free time. I will ask do you need any help three or four times. I allow them to do the work themselves. When they say we are done I check it and place it in the folder and they are free to do as they like. The reward is all free time in the evenings.

If you have more than one child like me I have 3 boys. I find it easier to give each child there on time to do homework (one at 5, then one at 5:30) or seperate them into different rooms when doing there work. Turn off all sounds or distractions and walk around to each one for a few mintues to check on or help them when they need it. Then maybe offer a reward for homework completed each day such as going out for icecream, computer time, treat of there choosing from the cabinet. Just a little something as an incentive sometimes works.

Good luck !

Make it a game. Give them some time to play and move around - it's difficult to do more school work right after school. While you are cooking dinner, sit them at the table or counter and have a race to see who will finish their work first. It's also a great way for them to get their nightly reading done. When my children were in that stage, neither of us liked the oral reading part. It's easier to listen to if you are busy.
