How can I make the transition to a new school easier on my 8 year old?

My daughter began this year at a new school, going into fourth grade. We absolutely LOVE the school, teacher, principal, etc. but she tells me that all the kids treat her so much different because she is "the new kid." This morning she actually cried to go back to her old school. I guess she is having a little trouble making new friends. All of the other kids already know each other which leaves her all by herself. I keep trying to reassure her that it will get better and pretty soon she won't be "new" anymore. I feel so bad knowng that she is having such a tough time. What else can I do??

I am a Navy brat and moved a lot. Something that helped me make new friends fast was joining after school activities. Does your daughter's school offer sports or music after school? Is there a community/neighborhood sports league?

One thing I did was invite the kids and parents over for a recipe exchange. Everyone made their favorite recipe and brought copies and the Mom's sat upstairs trying out the new food and having some Mom time and the kids went downstairs and played. We had a great time and it was a win-win for everyone because we were both able to make new friends.

She is currently in karate with a couple of girls from her school but they aren't in her class or grade. So I am definitely looking into to putting her into something after school - Hopefully we didn't miss the sign-up for all of the fall stuff...... She came home crying yesterday too :(
