My daughter stole once from a store and we brought her back and made her talk to the manager and a police officer. She had to bring back the item and appologize. She was very embarassed and sorry for what she did. She never did it again.

Another thing to try is to make him pay double the amount (after earning the money for it). If it was an item, figure out the cost and make him pay it back to the other kid with the apolgy letter. I like the idea of showing him your own finances and your own sacrifices too!

I suggest that you have him immediately take responsibility for what he's already done. Have him give back anything he's taken with an apology note that he's worked on himself for each and every kid he's stolen from. (my son's in 1st grade and just writing the notes would be punishment enough to make him remember it) If he wants something that is reasonable have him earn it. Set up a job list with the salaries on it. That way he has a say in what he earns and how quickly he gets what he wants. If he's always just been given everything he's ever wanted it will be a very rough road ahead but better start down it now than waiting. It would probably help to show him how you set up your own finances so he can see that you can't have everything you want, but you learn to live with it. If you don't want him knowing specific figures use percentages. Pie charts should be easy for him to understand.

he is just testing his bounderies, talk to him about the seriousness of stealing and explain that mummy only has a certain amount of money and will spend what she can on him and no more, tell him if he continues to steal then you wont buy him the things he likes anymore. Anther tip is to make him earn what he gets, that way he will realise that in life you dont just get things but you have to earn them, when he earns something ask him how he would feel if somebody stole it from him after all his hard work, he will then realise that it isnt nice to take things from other people.
