How do you get a child to quit lying?

We have a 8&9 yr old and they (just lately) have been lying over the dumbest issues. We have grounded them , but it does not seem to bother them.

I have a child in my religious education class who is like that and I am constantly asking him, "is that the truth or a story you made up?" He is slowly learning that it's not worth his time to lie to me because I catch him in the lie most times......

I find the word trust a big one in my family, I made the mistake of telling my son I didnt trust him, it's taken alot of work and praise to undo the hurt i caused him.

We're not that far yet, but I'm working on telling my daughter that I trust her. Small issues: have you washed your hands? - When I know she hasn't then I just say 'I trust you, so I won't smell them'. Normally that is enough to send her slinking around the corner to get them clean.
I missed that element of 'I trust you' when I grew up, and I know I would have been much more willing to go for truth and honesty if I felt I'd be trusted.

Try not yelling or disciplining for lying, ask why they are lying and if they tell the truth they wont be in as much trouble as if they lie and you find out!

my six yr old son went through that lying phase, and he eventually stopped because i went back to get what really happened from the friend or family member and he didn't like me investigating the situation so he quit!
