I need to find an after school daycare for my son. Any websites that might help?

My son has never been in daycare and I hate that I have to put him in one. This is very scary for me but I have no option, I need websites that will allow me to find a good one and also do history checks on them.

Does your school system have latchkey? It provides care at the school they attend after hours.

The YMCA would be a good 'safe' option as well.

Other than that, call your local childcare licensing authority - they'll have lists of providers who are licensed in your area.

I've seen a TV ad for care.com I haven't tried it out myself, but it sounded interresting. (finds care in your area, and does free background checks)

Good Luck and go with your gut. If something doesn't feel 'right' when talking/visiting with them - don't leave your child there.

How old is your son? Is there not a before/after school program at his school? That would seem like the easiest option, if there's a space for him. (Where I live, generally there are fewer spaces for older kids, but there are also fewer parents wanting to use the program for their older kids, so there are often spaces available in the 9-11 age group even if the spaces for younger kids are full up.)

If the program at the school doesn't have an available space and you need to look farther afield, try the website for your city/town/region and see if they list daycares. If you're in the US, there's a chain called "Kindercare" that some people seem to really like (although I think my kid would hate it -- it seems to be extremely structured and very focused on academics, which she gets plenty of at school, thankyouverymuch :P). Most places also have some kind of home daycare network -- home daycares have to be licensed and inspected by some kind of local or regional authority, so if you can find out what that authority is in your area, they should be able to give you some kind of list.

I'm afraid I don't really get why you find daycare scary. Billions of kids all over the world go to some kind of daycare -- it's a perfectly ordinary thing. Lots of kids have great experiences in daycare. Of course you want to check out any place that's going to be looking after your kids, but I don't think there's any reason to be afraid of them. I'm not sure what you mean by "history checks", either, so I can't help you there -- maybe somebody else will have suggestions on that ...
