My son has a book report due this week. It's not a book that the whole class is reading. They had to choose one from her classroom library. It's on a 5.6 reading level, but they're only 4th graders.

This is one of the passages I have an issue with:
(girl asks boy why he doesn't have a dad)
So where's your dad anyway?
Haven't got one.
Everybody's got one. So where is he?
I don't know. We never met him.
You're sayin' your mom never met your dad?
That is correct.
You're lying to me.
No, I'm not. Look, there's something called artificial insemination. When a woman wants a baby, but she doesn't have a partner, she can pay to get a man's sperm --
That's pure crazy to pay for that. All you have to do is go down to the bar and start buyin' drinks.
That's how you came about? I think there's a little issue called quality control here.
What are you saying about my mother? She married my dad good and proper. Only it's just...she was too young.
Well, at least you knew her.

Seems a bit much to me!! This teacher is difficult to communicate with, but I feel like I need to say something. It's too late to have him choose another book, but I'm not happy about the content of this one.

The only part that bothers me is the going to a bar part. I think talking about artificial insemination is OK for a 5-6 grader. I realize your son's not that age, but he's going to come across more mature topics when he's reading at a higher level. We had the same problem with my daughter.

I think it's nice that there are books that address the breadth of family units out there, but the reference of going to a bar and buying drinks is ... unfortunate, as is the sentence about the mom being too young. I would talk directly with the librarian about the book and perhaps recommend other titles that cover similar topics in a better way.
