My son has been using the potty since he was three, and we were so glad that he was being a big boy while standing up. But since he started daycare, he has been sitting on the potty to go pee-pee. When I tell him he has to stand up, he throws a fit. I asked the daycare if he does this and they all have said "NO, he stands up." I don't know what to do next.

Any advice?

I have 4 boys and I wish they would sit to pee. Makes clean up so much easier. Don't sweat it. Let him sit and be thankful. If you really want him to stand try putting a cheerio in the toilet and tell him to sink it.

It sound's like your classic power struggle. If he knows you want him to he knows he can get a reaction from you by not doing it. Your best bet is to ignore it, just be glad he makes it to the potty and goes. This too will pass.

have you asked HIM whether he pees standing up at school? sometimes schools don't tell the whole truth about these things. where i live, if they are potty trained - the staff are not allowed in the restroom with them so there would be no way for them to know whether my son was sitting or standing. i would vie to say - if he started by standing, and then started prek, he was probably instructed to sit during prek because it usually DOES keep clean up to a minimum. If you truly want him to stand, get him a peter potty and a toilet lid lock for your toilet. :D He won't have a choice then. lol good luck!

My son did the same thing after he was potty trained. I had visions of him doing it forever but the more he peed on the potty and the more grown up he got he grew right out of it. I wouldn't worry about it. He'll stand at home when he wants to.

I would say just let him be. It may be phase he is going through. Look at the bright side.... less urine to clean up off the toilet and floor.

I have a 5 year old son, and I prefer he sit to pee. That way it doesnt get all over the seat. He does stand at times when he wants to but as long as it is not bothering him to sit, I say let him. Its not a big deal really.

You could try and put a few cheerios in the toilet and have him make a game of trying to sink them :)

Relax if he is going potty be thankful. There are other things to stress about. This is normal. My 15 yr old sometimes still sits to potty. He will be fine mom. If you keep stressing about it he could refert back to not using the bathroom.

My son used to sit to pee but one day he saw his grandpa standing while peeing and he did it too. We had the potty chair in the family room and he just dropped his pants and stood there and peed. I was amazed and so proud of him. However he still likes to sit and pee like his dad does...I just leave it up to him.

I agree with the others. It shouldn't be a big deal if he sits or stands. My husband sits for the most part unless its to cold or in a public restroom. But if you'd really like him to stand maybe your husband should pee with him.

I taught my little boy to sit and one day my husband took him into the bathroom. from that day on he pees all by himself standing.

I also agree with others it doesn't realy matter if he sits or stands to pee, he will do it in his own time, the trick is not to get worked up about it and don't let it become a battle of wills, cos it could make him not want to use the potty either.

If you realy want him to stand up you could try one of these http://www.weeman.co.za/ we got one for my son because he did not want to sit down like his 2 sisters, he wanted to stand up like his dad, my son thought it was great :-)

Maybe he got in trouble one time when he stood up and missed the potty at daycare. I love it when my boys sit it means they hit the potty. don't worry he will grow out of it.Tena

Oh and with my son, he liked yo put a square of toilet paper in the toilet as a target. This might encourage him.

That's ok, in India and many other places all men and boys sit to pee. He will do it when he is ready; just be glad he uses the potty. All things work out eventually.

Well, unless my husband is in a public washroom he always sits. I only have girls so I don't have to deal with the whole sitting/standing issue but I say if he wants to sit and makes sure it's pointing down then let him sit. Whatever gets it into the toilet is good, right?

I agree with Kim Smith but would also add: be thankful that your cleanup is still easier. You don't have to worry about all the places where his aim was off around the commode! :)

Is there a reason that he needs to stand? If he does it at daycare, then he knows how. Relax & let him do it at home on his own time. For me, I'd just be thankful that he's potty trained. That he sits or stands wouldn't really matter.
