School counselor is a good idea. Have you asked her to elaborate WHY she wants to hit people?

Is hitting a behaviour that she witnesses frequently? Is it a behaviour that she has seen so often that she thinks it's normal, and ok? If so, I'd be concerned about her exposure to violence as well.

Ive had a sit down with the teacher and the principal now they are getting the school social worker involved because we cant figure out why shes behaving this way.

If it's happening at school, then you need to get her teacher involved. Your punishments at home aren't immediate and relevant, so it may not be having the effect you want. I would start with the teacher. I assume they've already been doing something and that's why you're hearing about it. Have a meeting with the teacher.
