Sealants for Children

My dentist keeps insisting that I get sealants for my 12 year old's molar teeth. I did this for my 15 year old when she was 12 (different dentist) and we had nothing but problems: cavities formed under the sealant, sealant had to be removed etc. It was painful and expensive(I don't have dental ins.) Neither my husband or I had sealants on our teeth when we were kids and have very few cavities. I'm just wondering if this is what other people have experienced with sealants? I am very leary of getting them done again as she does not have any problems with her teeth! But the dentist is being very pushy about it. Is your dentist pushing sealants for your kids?

All of mine have had them, the oldest has never had a cavity, the second to the oldest had one but not where it was sealed, the little two had them done over the last year and so far two good check ups.

I think 12 is a bit old really. talk to the dentist - tell him your reasons for being concerned. make him explain everything to you - like how there cavities under the sealant for your oldest child. ask how this can be prevented for your 12yr old. also - allow your 12yr old to have some say in it. and if you are still unsure - say no and leave it at that. no dentist should be so pushy.

I had mine done when I was a kid and never had any problems. One has fallen out and will be replaced in December. I just had my 9 yr olds done in May. I think its a great way to protect the teeth. I have never heard of anyone getting cavities under them.

My daughter had it done and when I was a teenager I was told I needed it. I thought the dentist was just after money and I was quite wrong. I should have had it done and I totally regret it.

Sealant has been around for a long time. I had my molars done in the mid 1980's with no problems.
No dentist should be pushy; I suggest you switch dentists!

Sealant is just painted into the crevices of molars and my oldest had it done once her six year molars came in. We have had no problem and no cavities.

Never had a problem with sealants however, I am really surprised they don't do this when they are much younger. My children had theirs done at 3 and 4 yrs old and it prevented any cavities from forming in their molars. They are now 14, 13 & 5yrs old. We have never had it removed. It was not painful in the least to have done only uncomfortable to keep their mouth open for a while.
