too much homework

My son just started school, he is 4 and a half. I was just wondering if it's right to be sitting for half an hour to an hour trying to do homework at night?? It is just cutting out or colouring in, but it is taking ages and he is getting annoyed every day over homework!!
He is only there a month and he hates homework already, which isn't a great start to the next 13+ years at school/college.
I would greatly apreciate all feedback and if i'm not the only one with this complaint.
Thank you Sarah

I have a son who is almost 5 and he is in senior kindergarten. He usually gets a thin book, maybe 10-15 pages long with 5-10 words on each page that we are to read with him and see how much he can read back. That's it...usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

4 1/2 seems awful young for homework. It sounds like it is taking so long because he hates it and you are having to fight to get him to finish it. My son is in 1st grade the second time with the same teacher and last year it SEEMED as if he had too much homework because we were fighting him to get it done. This year, after some learning disability diagnoses and just plain maturity, he actually has his homework done before we pick him up from daycare. Like I said before 4 1/2 seems awful young for homework even if it is just cutting and coloring. He might need another year just to mature a bit. They do mature at different ages and rates.

Is he in Kindergarten or is he in pre school, in my opinion there should be no homework from either grade unless it is in a game format so your child will enjoy doing it. I would talk to your childs teacher about how long it is taking him to get it done because that seems excessive for a 4 year old.
