Hello everyone,

My son just turned 4 and he is on waiting lists for pre-school and Jr. 4 Kindergarden (we do not have mandatory 4 year old kindergarden in Quebec, Canada, so there is very few spots and parents have to pay for it.) Anyway, I would like some suggestions on what kind of activities I could put him in to get him into a more structured mode for when he does start school. Not playgroups ... any suggestions? Thank you! =)

I don't know if you have kindermusic, but my kids loved it they get to sing and dance. They have some where mom stays then move up to being there alone so it can be a good transition.

If you're looking for an at-home activity, definitely check out http://www.Zoodles.com, it's a great free website for kids, filled with hundreds of fun, EDUCATIONAL games for their age. i'm quite biased since i actually work there, but i'm sure it'll give your son something to do while he waits to start kindergarten, and teach him things like spatial reasoning, early reading, counting, etc!

Best of luck :)

I don't know if you have anything like Gymboree but it was a huge help for my son. He was in preschool but it was very unstructured and Gymboree gave him some of the structure he needed. It is a little expensive if you take lots of classes. During the last year he took two classes : School Skills and Sports and did an additional 10 weeks of art and the structure was a real help for him.

Look into karate, singing (music) groups. Basically any group will give him a good sense of structure. Having to wake up to get ready and go to class, listening to instruction, following direction...all are super helpful and will get him ready for when he does start school.

Thanks Paula! He is outgoing and friendly. He likes to be with other kids too. I thought of gymnastics ... I will check it out! Thanks again! =)

It depends on what he likes to do....is he outgoing or solitary? I would find a sport or activity that he might like to do... Jr wrestling, or tai kwondo (spelling? lol) is good, I have my 4 year old boy in dancing and he loves it. You might also try gymnastics or tumbling. Get him used to being with groups of kids.
