I really enjoy having no system at all. I put the pages into the albums as they are completed, and that is where they stay. So one page may be when my 14 year old was born, and the next be when her brother was born ten years later. When my family looks through them, I find that by jumping around, it really seems to bring back more memories, comparisons, stories being retold by those looking through them that way. That is really the only thing I want from my books, to preserve the memories of everything from big events and holidays to the smallest day to day events we experience.

I think the easiest for me is how I take pictures. When you separate or catagorize you pics you can kinda get the feel of that. I do separate albums by themes because its easier than chronological----
xmas, halloween, other holidays
baby - first years to 4 yrs
school years - preschool to college
separate albums for each persons special interests
family - I include our family, my side, dads side, extended family events
Mini Albums for my fav pics or special times
Its just easier to add to the albums when its done by theme and easier to find certain events.
hope that helps

My experience is not to make one slbum all the same holiday. I did that and found that people that were looking at them got tired of looking at the same basic holiday page after page. I now make one album for all holidays and put them in order that way you can see the changes from year to year.

I have the great privelage of scrapping with a couple of overly-organized girls! One of our girls does year to year calendars. I saw a completed one and it was fabulous!!!! She would start off with a calendar page (she said she picked them up at Hby Lby) complete with scribble notes to mimick her kitchen calendar and then followed that page with all the events for that month. She is so uber-creative!!!! She says she does the books for herself and the kids can fight over them when she's gone. Hahaha....

I have 13 grandchildren I scrap for and each have their own books, done in chronological order. I have also done special occasion books, like my granddaughter on homecoming court, grandson's football, another gd cheerleading, etc.

I have a baby book for my sons 1st year (in the works) and will make a baby book for our next child's 1st year as well. I also have albums for my wedding, and any special vacations. I don't have any albums for specific holidays (as of yet) but do have a few pages devoted to the holidays in each general/family scrapbook (but I have a feeling that Christmas this year will get it's own album lol). For the general family albums I just scrap until I can't fit any more pages in an album and then continue to the next one :) I think that if I am still scrapping by the time my kids are grown, I'll go back thru time and make an album of all Christmases, all Halloweens, birthdays, things like that. I also make photobooks as gifts for my parents, mil (etc) and those are pretty generalized as well. Actually, while I'm thinking of it, I think I may start those entire Christmas albums now...then just add a few pages a year....might be easier lol. Hmmm... we'll see lol.

I have 2 sons, both graduated from high school now, I started scrapbooking years ago and I did books for both of them and they are complete. For one I just did it as life went along. For the other one I did a Christmas album and a album with birthday celebrations from 1-18 and then the other albums were just life as it went along. I also did a book for each of their high school graduations and one for high school special events, like music, sports, prom, etc. I am much happier with the one that I did Christmas and birthday etc. separate. It is so fun to pull that book out and look at all the Christmas' and see how much everyone has grown and changed without having to go through all the books trying to find the next year. This is why.

I love the 3 ring 12 x 12 binders and I can do them as I have photos (since I am so far behind...ha!!) and then each of my kids have their own books. They are onto #2 each and then if I only have one photo, but it is of the both of them and cannot chose where to put it I started a family album. That is where all of the misc. pages go. Then I have a separate one for vacations. They might be family, or they might be just ones that my husband and I took. Great questions Cara and there are GREAT ideas from everyone.

I organize by kids. I am doing a scrapbook for each of my 3 children. As I fill one, I start another, so they are going to have quite a few by the time they are older. I started my son's when he was little bitty, my older daughter's when she was born, and my younger daughter's with baby shower pics before she was born.
I do mine this way as well.My oldest was adopted from India at 31/2 but I have pictures as far back as 6 months. When that book was full I started a new one.I'm up to 3 books for Him.I started my daughters at Birth .
I'm starting a family album which will start with pictures after my dh's death when we first got back to Savannah. Then Holidays etc will go in there. My late DH and I were hs sweethearts so our book starts with jr prom,Sr prom and graduation .It became a family album when Nigel came home.I ended it with the a page of different pictures of the 3 of us with family forever embellishments.
For Christmas I plan todo an album with our traditions, cookies we make ,the card/picture we send out each year and Santa pictures.
I have pictures of Kolkata to do a book of India for Nigel with Bengali traditions and culture .He remembers everything about India so He'd enjoy this book.

I have a family one with everything from birthdays to holidays, then I have one for each of my daughters. I do my scrapbooks by year. Like a new family one every year. Its fun! You could do it however you chose to, just remember that there is no wrong or right way to scrapbook! Good luck

I have one for each of the children and then i have a family album. I also have special albums for family members who have passed away, one for our Harley rides. Things like that. I have a room dedicated to scrapbooking and crafting. And my kids all go to school and preschool making it a little easier to find time to scrap.

I did one for each child the first year of their lives. I tried to keep it seperate and do albums for each child but it was too hard because they are always together in the pictures. So after their first year of life I just do albums that have the whole family. I don't like to do albums with all Christmas, all Halloween, etc. because it gets boring looking at Christmas picture after Christmas picture. I just keep it chronological. I end up with about 4 albums a year. When I die the kids can split them up an make copies for eachother.
Crystal - posted on 08/07/2009
I do one for each year for my daughter and a separate one for my boyfriend and I (also one for each year). If we have more children I'll do the same and have separate books for each. That when when they're grown they can take their books to keep. I prefer to have all of the photos in one place (versus most of them still in a box or saved on the computer), so I do pages with mostly pictures and then some embellishments or accents. It takes less time and thought, still looks nice, but serves its main purpose: to be a place to store and view photos. Even still I'm way behind! :)

Christmas, Halloween, Easter, etc, that way all of the kids are in one place, I don't need to do layouts for each of them in their own album. Also have Beach, Cabin, Friends, and Family (Aunts, Uncles), Me & You (DH and myself), Sister (favorites of just the girls) Places we go (family trips or outings),Home sweet home (things that we love and do around home, the everyday stuff. Most of us have tons of photo's of our first child, lots of our second child and 3rd child is lucky to have any!! Dividing the albums up this way I don't have to do the same layout 3 times and most of the speicial events and holidays have all 3 girls in them anyway, not a whole lot of individual photo's after a while!! They each have an album of their own, well really they have many, I don't scrap in order, I do what I want to do and stick them in the book, I got away from post bound albums and use 3 ring now it makes adding pages so much easier. Also Pebbles makes great 12 x 12 protectors that hold 6 4 x 6 photos, for photo's I don't want to scrap but it keeps them in the correct book. The way I figure it is if I ever want to have things in order I can always move the pages around if they are in 3 ring binders

Also, if you do a layout of kids, you can make copies of it to put into other albums. That way, when you kids move out later, they and you both can have fave layouts. Costco has great prices and the quality is awesome!

You just have to read Stacy Jillians, Big Picture Scrapbooking and Photo Freedom, her system will change your life!! I am an instructer for a LSS, I teach a system much like she has in her books, everyone loves it, I am also a consultant for Close To Mt Heart and I share the information with all my club and workshop ladies, they have loved the ideas, I know it is not carried by the companies I work for but they are both so worth the $$'s spent

I am a phantic about having everything is date order, so I organize everything in date order as each event happened. I don't seperate each album by vacation, school holiday just as each event happened.

I have a lot of scrapbooks. I have one that is a hodge-podge of it all, in chronological order. Then I also have separate ones for both of my kids. Since getting a digi camera instead of the old 35mm, I take tons of pics and often times can put together a mini-album of separate vacations. These are more along the lines of weekend getaways. Our Disney vacation 5 years ago took a 12X12. Still haven't finished it. : ( I am also redoing my wedding album. The original album was done when I first started scrapbooking so has a lot of deco scissors and cheesy embellishments. Now I want a nicer album - a more grown up album. Oh, and I started a Book of Me album, too.

I am somewhat obsessive, so I have had a yearly photo album since 1982! I currently have an album just for my scrap club pages. My sisters and I have "circle" scrapbooks, which are GREAT fun. I do specialty albums from time to time - like the album I made for my husband's 40th birthday! I have lots of half-done albums! I really like alphabet albums.

Before Evie, I did one album per two years worth of childless stuff (weddings, vacations, etc.) but she's only 10 months and I'm already on my 3rd album, so I've organized them in 3 month intervals. I know, overboard. After her first year I think I'll cut down to 2 albums for her second year and one album per year after that.

I have done 1 baby album birth to first year. After that I started 1 family album a year with calendar pages throughout. I have a separate birthday, vacation and Christmas album that I do a lot of journaling & embellishing in (more so then the calendar year album). So far I have 5 years in each of the b-day and Christmas albums & 4 vacations in the travel album so they are easy to keep up with. CM albums are great and you can cram a lot in them. It can get expensive and you can run out of space to display/store the albums. I have done special 8x8 albums like A-Z Scriptures and a Disney autograph album. Those are fun, easy to store and special.

I made a first year book for each of my daughters then went chronologically from there. They are 3 and 5 years old and I have nine "family albums!" Oh my goodness! I must be nuts!! I enjoy it though. I figure when they are older I will copy pages in to an album of their favorites.

I've got 4 kids that are 4, 6, 8, and 10. I'm not making each one a scrapbook. My oldest has a life book, since she's adopted. Other than a book a year, we have some special ones of vacations and one of heirloom family pics. I just always say they're going to have to fight over the pages when I'm gone!

I started my first scrapbook with the day my oldest son was born (nov 2001) and continued chronologically until the book was full .. conveniently the book was full just as my daughter was born (jan 2006) so that is where i have started my second album. I will have that book full before i get to the birth of my third child (april 2009) but that is okay because i have been faithful to my chronological order .. i put everything in it .. i usually go through the calendar and make a list of all the events that i have pictures for from the previous year because i am usually at least that far behind .. i then will dedicate how many pages per event... i am a little bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to my scrapbooks LOL

Albums??? What albums? LOL I still need to do that. I just make the pages and then put them in the plastic sleeves. I have a bunch of different albums, but so far they remain empty....
I'm planning on doing a baby book for each of my three, one Christmas album, one Halloween, and so on...
I like the idea of doing albums year by year though....

I don't have the time I would like to put into it. I am fairly new. I need lots of guidance (Tammy, Trudy)! I've gone to a few sessions where a bunch of scrapper get together, but just felt lost. They are so advanced. So far, I just have a bunch of pages that need put in albums. I am trying to do one of each child and family albums. Love the ideas here.

When I first got into it my children were a little older so I started there album by doing highlights of each birthday, holiday, trips, etc. Then I started doing it chronologically. I also have family albums and I duplicate pictures and put them in each of my chldren's albums (5 children total) I keep it all in chronological order now and my plans are to give them their books when they get married.

I've started so many scrapbooks! I realized I had too many going and have pared it down to this...
One school album... (only 4 pages per year). Actually it's two school albums per child. I bought a red one for elementary and a blue one for middle/high school.
One Birthday album... (i really go crazy on these pages and let myself use as many pages as I want for each birthday party)
One family album... (I usually get only one year in the family album... but this time I'm trying to get two years in one album. I don't want them to start piling up and then they won't seem as special. I include all our vacations in the family album. With the exception of Disney trips... I bought a cute Disney album : )

I do digital scrapbooking and make a digital for each event. I take so many pictures. I am, currently, at a baseball tournament with my son. I will make a scrapbook of the event. With older photos I have scanned (and forgotten stuff becasue I didn't write it down) I try ti group the families and maybe the same type of event and guesstimate. You are probably much mroe organzied about labeling photos. I have phots from family back ion the 1850's

Anytime I take pictures I download them and make a scrapbook page for that event or activity right away. At the end of the year (christmas time) I print 5 sets of all the pages I made that year. I put them into books and give a book to my brother, Mom, aunt, in-laws and keep one for myself. Everyone looks forward to their gift every year. I go through A LOT of ink (about $75) but it's totally worth it. All the pages are saved on my computer so if anything happens to anyones book I can replace it. This is the system that works for me.

I am terrible about keeping my pictures organized. I scrapbook as I take pictures so, no my scrapooks are not organized by holidays,or themes. I did not start scrapbooking until my first grandchild was in High School. Thank goodness I had pictures of her when she was little. So I do have scrapbooks that are about each grandchild. My eldest grandchild is married and I still keep a scrapbook on her life.
Tammy - posted on 07/29/2009
It depends on how many photos I have of each event. Since I got into scrapping after my children were in high school, I didn't have the luxury to do a book for each year. So I did a life book instead. This book chronicles and highlights life through high school graduation and includes baptism, first day of school, funny school stories or pictures, a letter a wrote to her, best friends, family and school highlights. It was challenging, as I had to weed a lot out, but overall the book gives an excellent reflection of the life and times of Sarah from birth through high school. Now, I organize by event, or by theme and then scrap in the same way.

So far, I have a brag book for when each child was born, and a 12x12 for each child. I'm way behind, but they have each been chronological and covered about 1 year. I have one of my husband and I when we were dating, but never finished it. I've also started an over-sized one with just professional portraits. I've though about starting one with seasonal things we do each year, like Christmas, Easter, pumpkin patch, and Renaissance Festival, maybe in sections so you can see how the kids have grown over time, but haven't decided how I want to do it yet.
