It sounds like you have a ton of pics. I would start with the present though .. sometimes its not as overhwelming.

Definately make a scrapbook. As far as where to start try a kit for the first one it has everything in it coordinated for you.

I use my originals because my scrapbooks are my photo albums. I do not need more copies of the photos to store. If the products are not safe to use around photos I don't use it. It is a personal choice and one only you can make.

a good tip for scrab booking. i just started originaly using things from the party we had a ttended. collect confetti and things from the tables and room so that you can put these around the pictures in the albums. brightens the pages up having momentos there too and thats how i started scrapbooking i do it with all my pictures.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't use originals. Maybe if you don't have the negatives or a disc, and you may want to make more copies in the future... but chances are probably slim. Personally I wouldn't use my time scanning plus my money to pay for more photos. but another option is to do a digital book. If you have a scanner and you don't mind taking the time, you can keep those originals loose and still have a scrapbook.
Have fun!

Using them to make a scrapbook is a great idea, but never use originals for scrapbooking. Scan and/or make copies - if you don't have a scanner, Wal-Mart and the like do, or go to a Kinkos, etc.
Personally, if you've never done a paper scrapbook before, I'd recommend scanning your photos and using the digital images to make a photo book online. OR go to a local scrapbook store and see if they offer classes for beginners - this is how I started (way back when - ha ha!) and it was very inspirational.
