If not the cricut - then what?

I had a look at the cricut = wow. so many cartridges. They do make a lot of figures, but it seems to me that a cartridge should be able to hold so much more than those do.

I mean, my kids nintendo DS have these stupid games that are barely bigger than my thumbnail and they hold just soooo much information.

Is there a machine that connects to your computer and can cut what is out there on the internet? It seems like someone was talking about something that sounded sorta like that?

I think there is a program that goes along with the cricut that does that and I think it only works with the larger cricut.
Now I could be wrong but I think this is what I have read..............anyone else?????

The program you're referring to is Cricut Design Studio.  It works with ANY Cricut machine.  It allows you to have more control over your image cutting options.  You can make letters stick together, you can merge shapes from different cartridges, etc.  Really cool!  But remember, you can only cut with the carts you actually own.  All the different carts are loaded onto design studio, but when you go to cut, you have to load each cartridge.  You can download the trial version at cricut.com and make any design you want.  It'll only allow you to cut with the cart your machine came with, though.  You have to buy it at the store to fully cut with all the carts.  Recently, I've heard WalMart was clearancing theirs out for anywhere from $10-$50.  Sadly, they all sold out in my area for that price :(  Hope that helps! :)

Quoting Becky :

I love my cricut!!!! I'm not sure that I could go back to scrapbooking without it. The cartridges are an investment but you can get most of them on ebay for $40 or less these days. I'm interested in learning more about the new Gypsy that they are promoing right now. Do you have to have the cartridges with you when you go to cut? or is it just like design studio but mobile? I'm a little leary about buying a new product from provo craft when it first releases because they natoriously have issues with their new products.... Does anyone know more about the Gypsy?

No, Becky, that's what is awesome about the Gypsy!  You can load all your carts on it and just plug it in and not have to switch out carts when you go to cut.  If you go to Cricut.com they've got a video demonstration of it.  I'm asking the hubby for it for Christmas.  I heard you can only load a cart onto one Gypsy, though.  My MIL doesn't want one, so we're thinking about sharing carts.  I'll get a gypsy, load the carts onto it, and she can keep the carts at her home for whenever she'd like to use them.  It'll save us loads of dough :)

I need to call our local scrapbook shop and ask if they cutting nights - although I have no idea what I would want to cut. Still it would be nice to hang out with some ladies and get ideas on the spot with my stuff.

All of my 4-H girls doing scrapbooks for projects this year, used the cricut for their albums, a couple of girls did all their titles and embellishments just from the cricut they turned out nice. I love my expressions my bf has one and we just share cartridges-- although i have had mine the longest and am addicted to the different cartridges( gotta love the jukebox) lol

I've had a cricut for over a year and just took it out today to try it. Yes, it was an investment that just sat while I didn't have time. I am so pleased with it! Remember that there are two types of cartridges. The solutions is less expensive than the regular one, but it has less shapes. None the less, with all the different possibilities and sizes, I am looking to upgrade to the expression after trying my cricut just once.

Check out ebay, because they have the best deals if you have time and patience to track and get to know the average cost of winning auctions.

Ok can you help me understand better by showing me where you get your figures for cutting out from?

yes it would cut that but you would have to layer it (so cut the 'back' grey layer out of one color, the white out of another color, and the 'top' grey 'wing' out of a color then stack them up-does that make sense??) I have the silhouette which is the same as the wishblade and same as the craft robo just with a different label basically.

I just looked that up, it looks amazing.

I have a wihblade and I like it because u dont have to buy all them cartridges u can download anything to it to cut out from the internet or ur own pc. its a lil more pricey but worth it.

I have a cricut and Sure Cuts A lot...it is awesome. You can use TTF's off your computer and other files that you have to cut with. You can still use the cartridges, but I only have 2 of them. I love my SCAL program. It gives you much more variety in choices.

Good luck in your search. :)

Sharon, go on the Cricut website, go to Information, and click on cartridge library. It'll come up with a huge list of all the available cartridges. Next to each one there is view handbook, click on it and it'll come up with a pdf file that shows each and every page of the handbook to the specific cartridge and you will see how much info is on each cart. Also, keep in mind that you can make your shape anywhere from 1/4 in to 23 1/2 in tall (if you have the Cricut Expression). I don't think there are any other machines that can do that. There are a lot more shapes to each cartridge than what is printed on the back of the box. It is just awesome.....and yes, buying cartridges is a little like crack! LOL ;)

Plus, there's a program you can buy off the internet that will allow you to cut any true type font you have on your computer using your Cricut. I think its 75 bucks or less. Sure Cuts a Lot is what it is called. It'll most likely be on my wish list this Christmas :)

Another thing about the slice the largest you can cut is 4". I do not know much about the silhouette or pazzles, have not had the opportunity to run either of them. I have a cricut and i love it.

One quick thing about the Slice. I saw it demo'd at a store. It's pretty small which makes it portable, but it also limits how much you can cut at a time. I forget if you can only do one thing at a time or if she just was making it big so there was only room for one...but if you were going to do a title it would be cut the first letter, move the machine, cut the second letter, move the machine, etc. It really made me appreciate that I could type a whole title and more into my cricut and just let it do its thing.

I have the silhouette (same as the craft robo and wishblade) and can cut whatever I want, or you can purchase things. I would LOVE a pazzles, but those are a little out of my price range!

great link here with some great information-a bit out of date, but still good info:

http://scrapbooksbypam.blogspot.com/2006...

the new silhouette also takes SD cards so you could load an SD card up with fonts, sayings, images, or whatever and bring it to a crop and not have to bring a computer/laptop too.

I love my silhouette.

PS-there are also manual die-cutting machines like Sizzix (made by Ellison), and a slew of others!

there is also the making memories slice. Oh there are just to many fun toys!
