I have a daughter with SPD and is 34 months old and when she gets upset she will come up to me and scratches, hits and will bites and she will also scream. I don't know what to do to get her to stop this behavior. She has also pulled a little girl off the swing by her hair and hits and scratches her fellow classmates. The school puts her on timeout which doesn't work. Does any one else deal with this behavior and how do you control it?

Thank you so much Amber! She is on the waiting list for OT so I am doning the best I can to deal with this. I will try the brush technique and see if it works.

I dealt with this from my son who is diagnosed with SID. It took about a year of OT twice a week and a sensory diet to get these violent outbursts under control. From everything I have learned through therapy, doctors, books and experience this is not abnormal for children with SID/SPD. The brush technique helped my son calm down when episodes like this occurred. I had to educate his teachers about this as well. I personally bought books for the school and had OT talk to them and teach them how to properly use the brush. I also put him in martial arts at 3 which helped promote positive behaviors as he couldn't get belt promotions without calming down at home and school. Self education on your child's diagnosis is the best tool in your mommy arsenal.
