This afternoon after my sons nap I walked into his room and he had 1 of his legs over the side rail of the crib. He is almost 22 months old. Should I put him in a toddler bed or is he too young still?

Mine is 22 months too and I just switched her. The first couple times I layed down in the room with her to help her get the concept and after that she has done great. She still needs a gate up at her door though otherwise she would feel like she could wander the house :) The only thing in her room is her bed and dresser that way there really isn't anything for her to play with and stay up.

My daughter just turned 22 months and we're having the same worries. I would say that since he's trying to climb out that it may be time to try out a toddler bed. Mine's not climbing out, she's climbing in! When in doubt, if you try it and he doens't seem to be doing well after some time you can go back to a crib and try it again. But eventually after time, he'll get used to it no matter what.

Mine 22 month old sleeps so much better in his "big boy bed" than he did in his crib. We moved him in the twin sized bed at 21 months. We have left the toys in his room but he does not get up in the middle of the night and play. Now when he wakes up and needs us he comes and knocks on our bedroom door and we go back and lay down with him in his bed. It has helped break him of the habit of sleeping in our bed too. He sleeps through the night now. It has been such a blessing!

We just put our little guy in the toddler bed because he had jumped out twice during nap times. We didn't want him getting hurt. I have to tell you, though, nap time has been seriously comprimised. That didn't happen with my oldest, but now he doesn't want to sleep in his new bed for naps. At least he sleeps through the night with no issues. It was the reverse with the other. Each child is differnt :)

take him to a store and see how he responds. my daughter loved her older sister's bed and was always in it so we thought it was okay. and so far (two weeks or so) she's been okay. we converted the crib into a toddler bed but it was high and she didn't like it as much. i think it depends on the child. i felt like she could have been in a toddler bed months ago but her dad felt differently.

My daughter was about 13 months old.. She love playing in the big bed so then I thought I would start putting her in there... Its great when going on holiday you don't have to lug the portacot with you you can just put them in a single bed.

Jake is 22 mo. and we recently moved him into a twin. It looked much smaller in the catalog. I love it because he is confined while asleep but the sides are low enough for him to climb out. Jake loves his new big boy bed and I haven't had too much of an issue with him sleeping or getting out.

We just put our son in a toddler bed last week. I dont think its a bad idea people have told me you can even start at about 15 months old. He hasnt quite got the whole stay in the bed thing down yet and we have found him behind the door and almost under the bed sometimes but if he wakes up in it enough he will get the idea that is where he is supposed to sleep.

I started my son in a toddler bed at 16m and then to a twin bed at 20m, he is now 22m and he is doing great. It is nice to be able to sit in bed with him and read books before bed or lay down for a nap with him.

My partner and I are making our son a Car Bed, with the car's sides like rails that go along the side until the very end, where he can get out. I think the other mothers are right, try him out. My son is two in September, but he isnt ready, when he starts climbing i'll be making more of a decision then.

At 22mo my son is taller than any of the 3 y/o's we know, but he has only JUST settled in a fantastic night time sleeping thing. As he is still perfectly happy in his cot I'm not even going to suggest it as I want this new phase of peace to last as long as possible. This transition is not one I'm in a hurry for as I don't think he would gain anything at this point from being in a bed. However, as other mums have said, their little ones have been ready from as young as 10mo. Individual development stages all the way!

There are 2 things that will encourage me to progress to a big boy bed: 1) climbing out 2) if he doesn't fit anymore and bangs his head!

If there's climbing out happening then he has that freedom anyway and is clearly ready for the progression. To make him safe and set a new routine into place, then a big bed makes perfect sense. The Mums who have done it have given great advice for that transition period so good luck!

My oldest son went to a toddler bed at 16 months and my youngest at 19 months and both of them have done great with it. My oldest went to a twin bed at 31 months old and is doing great. (He actually gave up his toddler bed for his brother.) I also have a friend who's son never had a crib he started out on a mattress on the floor and then when he got older and was walking went into a toddler bed. I don't think there is a to young in general it is just what is best for everyone involved.

Good Luck.

My daughter is already in a twin size bed with a guard rail. This is our second DD and we have never actually done a toddler bed; we typically just put them in a twin bed. The freedom will drive you crazy a few nights, but we stay very consistent--putting them back to bed over and over. Only takes a few nights :)

I have twins and by 18 mths my son was climbing the side of his crib to try to jump into his sister's crib while she slept. So we went to the toddler that day. Since there wasnt much time to introduce him to the concept we put his bumper along the sides and made sure he had all the same things as when he was in crib and he never had an issue. I really think the bumper helped give that same sense of security as when he had a crib.

I had my son in a toddler bed at 14 months I had to try a toddler bed as he kept climbing his cot and then started to not want to sleep in it i'm guessing he felt to trapped in it anyways the toddler bed only lasted maybe 3 weeks. He kept falling out of bed cause he likes to sprawl out. So I brought a safety rail and then he wouldn't sleep in his bed because he didn't like the safety rail and I'm starting to think the mattress from the cot wasn't as great as I paid good money for. So I went out and brought him a single bed, he is now 22 months and he has slept in it every night since I got it for him, I had no problems keeping him in bed or getting him to seep (he usually falls asleep between 7.30pm - 8.30pm) I think he appritiated having his own big boy bed and a decent mattress that is really comfy and now he can sprawl out and not fall out of bed too.

So my advice would be to check how good the mattress is and make sure you bub has enough room to move about and sprawl out and if you have to get a single bed don't hesitate = ] It's the best thing I've done for my little boy so he could get a good night sleep = ]

I put my daughter into a big bed after she climb out! She was 14 months! So I new that I had to get her a big bed. She had no problems at all, and loves the fact she can get in and out of bed by herself.

Hi Dana, Althought I said go for it I was thinking that you never know til you try. If parents think the time is right for their children then yes I would say go for it. We have not made a decision yet, as like Julie Derry our son only had one leg over the cot bars. He actually finds it difficult to climb as there is nothing to get hold off. If I am honest, I would say I don't want to rush my son growing up, it is already happening too fast !!!

[deleted account]

P.S. I should also add that I don't think there's any "right" age to switch to a toddler bed. Like anything with children, from when to start solids or when to start potty training, it's all about your individual situation and whether or not your child is showing signs of readiness. It's different for everyone and you have to do what's right for you and your family!

Alison, Roxanne is 22 months tomorrow and she actually asks to go in her crib....she LOVES it and I've never caught her climbing it either. I consider myself lucky because we paid a lot of money (well actually my parents bought it) for her bedroom set and her crib is beautiful so I'm glad she's still enjoying it! Plus, I've talked to quite a few people that say their children won't nap during the day once they're in a toddler bed?!

We're happy right where we are! :)

We've had Xan in a Toddler bed since he was about 17 months old, simply because we wanted to avoid the whole climbing-over-the-cot-bars scenario. He's only ever fallen out of bed once in the 4 months since then. Make sure you let your son see you assembling it during the day and let him get in and out of bed a few times when it's done, so that it's something fun rather than scary, and everything swhould hopefully be fine. Good luck! :)

My 22 month old refuses to sleep in her crib. She has taken over her sister's old toddler bed . I figured it would be safer for me to put her in that bed than her climbing out of her crib in the middle of the night to get to the other bed.

i put my son in his toddler bed the day he figured out how to climb out of the crib. that was at about 10mo. he loves his big boy bed. i said to my husband the day he was born the first time he climbs out then he goes right into the toddler bed, and that is what we did. i know it sounds young but the kid figured out how to stack his pillows on top of each other to get to the top of the crib. it is very dangerous if they fall out of the crib and hit their head on something. i say if he can get one leg over then he would be able to get both legs over in just a mater of days and be able to climb out. i say toddler bed is best and i use the side rails that you can buy online or at walmart, i got both mine at goodwill and they were in great shape even tho they dont match.

My 23 month old daughter has jumped out of her crib about 10 times! She was going through a really clingy period and no matter how tired she was she refused to lay in her bed! I thought for sure we were going to have to convert her crib to a toddler bed but I just was not ready for the new bedtime battle that would create so I laid down next to her bed at naptime with her in it and when she threw her leg over the side I told her very sternly "NO! That is an owie!" every time she did it. She eventually calmed herself down and went to sleep while I read a magazine on her floor facing away from her. She seemed to get the message (I'm sure she knew it wasn't painless to leap from her bed) and hasn't done it since! I know eventually we will convert her bed but at least I can rest assured that (for now) she is safe and sound in her bed! I hope that helps you!

My son is 21 months old and been out of his crib since he was 17 months old. His crib coverted to a toddler bed and then to a full size bed but we discovered he didn't like the bars on the crib so we made the bed into a full size bed and he loves it.

My daughter always sleeped in a bed with me but arround 14 months we put her in her own room. At first it was really hard cauz she was used to sleep with me, so she would get up constanly we'd just put her back in bed, sometimes it would take her 1 1/2 to get her to sleep but now she's 22 months she maybe gets up once or twice sometimes she doesnt gets up at all! I love having her in a bed cauz after nap she just gets out and joins us, i love in the morning she comes in my room and wakes me up with a good morning! =) Its all up to you when you want to do the swich but i think you should do it soon just cauz it makes them so proud and especialy if they can climb out of it!

We put our first 2 into toddler beds at 12mos. When our 3rd climbed out of the crib at 12mos, he went right into the bottom of the twin sized bunk, we just bought a bed rail and a stool so he could climb in.

I have been wondering that about my son who is also nearly 22 months, sometimes he tries to climb out of his cot, he can nearly do it himself when the side rail is lowered. I would go with your instinct, a friend of mine has had her son in a toddler bed for quite a few months now as he climbed out. He is a few days younger than my little boy. I am thinking we might get a toddler bed over next month or two, so go for it I say!

Another option is getting a netted tent for the top of the crib. I had to switch to a toddler bed too but was very nervous when I did since our daughter is hooked up to tubes and monitors during sleep. The tent provided the perfect way to safely keep her in her crib. She is now sleeping still and quiet in her toddler bed.

[deleted account]

I say if they're jumping out or dangling limbs out in a desperate attempt to be comfy, it might be time to make the switch! I had both my daughters in twin beds w/ safety rails before they were 2. My little guy, 21 mos now, sometimes gets his foot stuck between a couple bars so it seems he's starting to get uncomfortable in his crib. There's always a chance they'll mess around and take advantage of the new freedom, but if that's the kind of kid they are, they'll do it whether you put him in a bed now or wait till he's 3. If you can handle the upheaval and are stern with "bedtime" not "playtime," it'll be a quick transition.

My daughter is also almost 22 months and has been in a toddler bed since March or April. We bought brand new sheets for the toddler bed to make it special and haven't had a problem! She's been wanting to sleep in big brother's full size bed (they share a room) so that's been a pain during nap time and bed time (sometimes). It all really depends on what you're comfortable with.

I moved my daughter into a toddler bed at 20 months. She had not yet succeeded at climbing out, but she kept getting her leg stuck between the bars trying. It was leaving bruises, so I decided it was time.

[deleted account]

My son has been in a toddler bed since he was 15 months old because he shimmied up the bars of his crib and face planted on the floor.

So no, he is not too young and given your son is already starting to actively try and climb out and get stuck. He is definitely ready for a big boy bed.

I started my son out in a toddler bed in Febuary. hes also 22 months. I got him a toddler bed (a full matching set actually with table n chairs and a little couch) with the hopes to get him out of sleeping in our bed more easily. He hated the bars on his crib and FREAKED everytime i would put him in it. He loves the "idea" of having his own bed but he still refuses to sleep in it. Hell sit on it during the day and look at books and sometimes watch movies but if he wakes up in it he gets mad. I was very surprise tho that he wouldnt just get out of it at night. The dark must make him nervouse to leave it. I would say try it out. Make it a fun experience for him.

You can try putting him in a toddler bed and see how he's doing. My son is 22 months and we put him in a toddler bed at 18 months. He was so excited coz of how small it was that he slept in it all night...granted, he did fall off the bed a couple times so we had to drop pillows on the sides, but now he stays put. When he's sick, we let him sleep with us, but he usually finds himself back in his bed in the middle of the night. I would just suggest to try him out with the bed and see how he adjusts to it.

My daughter 21 months gets out of her crib and it scares the crap outa me. Just the other night she got out of her crib and and at 4 in the morning to a baby butt in face.
