As the first year is behind us now I wonder how many of you are continuing to breastfeed? Do you have a plan or goal to wein your LO at a certain age/stage? With them eating a variety of solids how often is your LO still nursing?

Kiera loves to nurse and if she'll allow I'd like to wein her around 18 months. During the day while she's in DC she takes a cup of breastmilk and I continue to pump and fill our freezer. At night she nurses directly and I see no end in sight for the bedtime connection we have. Just curious as I sit an sip my 'Mothers Milk' tea what other mommy's are thinking.

My son is 16 months old and he still breastfeeds before he goes to sleep. He goes to daycare and drinks out the sippy cup, and he drinks regular milk. I plan on weaning him next month. He is eating a variety of solid foods, and drinks water and loves apple juice! As far as our bedtime connection with breastfeeding i see no end in sight either, but im going to try to wean him next month!

An afterthought I had....my little one has not been sick very much in her 16 months, just once, but it lasted 3 weeks. During this time, I was so glad that I was still breastfeeding as that is the only thing that she wanted. She wasn't eating solids and was barely drinking water or milk. The only thing she wanted was the boob, and I think that is the only reason that she didn't become dehydrated. Thank God that I was stilll breastfeeding!

16 1/2 months and still going strong! Although since my son still loves nursing, he is a very picky eater. He does fine with cow's milk, which is what my husband generally gives him if I'm not home at bedtime. No definite plans to wean yet, but I'm getting to the point where I'd really like my old shirts to fit again (but not badly enough to really do anything about it). : )

I am wondering the same thing. My little one is 16 months now and nurses 3x a day. She really enjoys it and I feel guilty wanting to wean her off, but at the same time, I don't want to continue for too much longer!

Wow this is so good to read. All you mums still breastfeeding! My son is 15.5 months old and still BF. He loves it and doesn't look like ever wanting to stop. My other two kids self weaned at 12 months so I thought Harrison would do the same. It worried me at first when he showed no interest to stop, but now I'm happy to let him decide when he's had enough. He has a big feed 1st thing in the morning and then just little sucks during the day when ever he feels like helping himself. He eats fairly well, but not in the high chair, and he drinks 3 bottles of cows milk a day. Breastfeeding is such a lovely thing to be able to do for him.

My nursing specialist said it is fine till 24 months. They only tell people 12 months because it is so hard to start/continue for some moms. So... that being said. My daughter is 15 months and still nursing till 24 months. I am going to start weining at 22 months to make it easier on her t 24 months. But go gung ho.

Haven't thought about this lately. Initially I intended to stop after the first year, but with the flu season as is and being a September baby, I figured it would be best to continue thru the winter. She's starting to lose interest a little, but still waking me up at night to feed. One night it's 3 times and the next she sleeps thru...go figure? We'll see where we are around March or so...wish me luck!

My daughter is almost 16mths old and still nursing. I have often been concerned about weaning her because her brother weaned on his own at 12 mths. She seems to have no interest in weaning. She has been taking a sippy cup since 4 mths old and would never take a bottle even when I pumped. She eats well, very well, but no interest in cows mild at all. I'd like her to be weaned no later than 2, it is already a bit awkward when she tugs at my shirt or tries to pull it up herself in front of others. But there is nothing like the bond you create while nursing, those are our special mommy and me times and hate the thought of giving them up!

My daughter is 15 months and is no where near ready to stop BF. I've been trying to wein her, but it seems like here the past few weeks she has decided to nurse more than before. we've had to hide the boppy pillow b/c she cries to feed everytime she sees it. Now she gets pillows off the couch and follows me around with them crying.

She drinks whole milk and eats very well, but she still wants to comfort nurse before naps and especially at night time.

My daughter is 15 months and self weaned at 13 months. I let her take the lead and she cut out the evening session while we were on vacation. The morning one dropped off when she started sleeping until 7:30am. She now drinks keifer and milk in the mornings which worked good for getting her to drink milk.

My son is 15 months old and I have no intention of stopping breastfeeding. The WHO and most major health organizations recommend breastfeeding to 2 years AND beyond. I will stop when he is no longer interested. Breastmilk is the BEST food for a young human. He gets a bottle of soya milk during the day before his nap as he doesn't like cow's milk. I also think the intimate bond that breastfeeding has formed between my son and I is of inestimable value, as long as he needs to be comforted by me, I'll be there.

Crazy how when I stared (knowing I wanted to do it for a year) I had to tell myself, "just make it to 3 months," "just to 6 months," because it was sometimes tiring or overwhelming. And now, it's such a great part of life, I have no desire to stop! Nor does my little guy. We take it one day at a time. And it makes sickness and temper tantrums easier to get through. Yay boobies!

WOW, I'm so glad to see so many of you continuing your healthy breastfeeding relationships!!

Kiera is 15 1/2 months and when I originally made this thread she was 13 months. I'm very happy to say I still see no end in sight. She happily nurses on demand (or about 4 times a day) when I'm not working. When I'm at work she takes mommy's milk in a cup and 1 cup of organic whole milk. At first she was resisitant to the whole milk but has become accustomed to the taste and does well with it.

Yeah for extended BF'ing!

My LO is 15 months and we're still going strong. I have no plans to stop any time soon, and I'm leaving it up to her. As I work from home, I have no problem continuing. I've introduced cows milk, but she has decided she HATES it and that's fine by me, I have the milk she wants. She eats solids well and drinks juice and water from a sippy cup, and BF about 4 - 6 times a day and once or twice a night. (Most are just comfort feeding.) It's great to see so many still nursing. Keep up the good work!

My 15 month old is showing no sign of giving up his boobies. He feeds several times during the day and sometimes 2 or 3 times a night as well, especially when he is teething or sick. He eats other food and will drink water from a sippy cup. I have just recently introduced him to soy milk in a cup (he is dairy intollerant) and so far so good. But even with that there are no definate plans to stop the boobies all together.

Quoting Robyn: i think it depends how often you are BFing daily. Also if youve gotten your period yet....also i was BFing when i founf out i was preggy...and i continued BFing first 3 months...then i was just fstigued but is possible to do it all!

Quoting Lize:

My son is still nursing and I have no idea how to wean him since he nurses himself to sleep! We want to fall pregnant again, but when I went for my check-up recently the gynie told me that it will not be possible for us while I am still nursing. I really don't want to stop breastfeeding, but don't want to to risk not having any more babies. Anybody else in the same position?

HI Lize,

Sorry but your Gynie has it wrong. I have been BFing my 14 month bub and fell pregnant at 9.5 months. It was not viable but it is still possible to fall pregnant whilst BF'ing and also possible to tandem feed once your next child is born. Good luck with it all.

I made 6 months and was so proud of myself. I'm now expecting #4 this time I want to shoot for a year. You are an inspiration to me. Thanks for your stories.

my boy is 15 months old. i am nursing...stopped pumping and have 1 frozen bag left! we mix my milk w whole lactaid milk so he is used to it when im not around. but with me its always breastmilk. he drinks bm3x a day (more when teething). i keep it to only at home.i simply don't bf out...so its a type of weaning. he can have water or juice or bottle of milk out of house.
our ped said that he isnt gaining much weight bc breastmilk has no fat content after babies are a year old and that i should offer more fatty foods!!

and i became pregnant w him while still breastfeeding my older girl...but she was only bf'ing 1x a day by then (she was 21 months when i stopped). so its okay to keep going but just gets tiring to bf while preg.
i have no immediate plan to stop but would like to cut back to 1 or 2x a day eventually fpr morning and bedtime.

My 14 month old is still breastfeeding and we are both very happy with it. He has milk on demand. He eats his solids well. We co-sleep also so he wakes at night for a feed.
I get alot of stick from people saying he should no longer be breastfeeding as well. He is still a baby and still needs his milk. I am happy to continue until he wants to stop. What others think is their problem.

But Mady loves her boobies, lol and she is healthy that is all that matters to me

Hi, it is nice to read that so many are still breastfeeding. My daughter is 14 months and has approx 3 feeds in the day 1 or 2 at night. She hasn't really dropped any feeds except if we go out and I just give her water and food until we get home. My first son weaned himself at 14 months but my second son was still feeding at 2 years old and I was 4 months pregnant with my daughter. I had really bad morning sickness which made feeding a little unpleasant but he just didn't want to give it up. I didn't want to be feeding two children at once so I just cut one feed down a day for a few weeks until he was down to 1 feed. The last feed was the hardest and he cried every night for a long time but he eventually started drinking cows milk instead. Anyway no plans to stop feeding my daughter I would prefer she weaned herself but if she doesn't maybe once she is 2 I will look at weaning her myself.

Christina- I think its GREAT that you and Ava are still getting to nurse! There is no "right" time to quit nursing. Let her tell you when she wants to quit, I think child-led weaning is MUCH better than mommy-led. What you are doing for her is awesome by giving her that b-milk.

If you do feel at some point that you need to quit, I would suggest just taking one feeding away at a time to wean her, replace the feeding with milk (or at night, water).

Good luck to you and Ava and to many more nursings!!!

Good topic.

I had intended to wean Stella at 1yr, but her birthday has come & gone and we still have her getting a morning & night feeding (and sometimes in between on my days off).

She's really attached to it.

I don't have enough of a supply to pump, but my husband refuses to put her on whole milk, so we are buying the formula for older babies.

I'm with you though, I want her weaned by 18 mths.

My 14 month old Ava is still breastfeeding...She actually points to my breasts and tries to say it. I don't really want to stop. She is on whole milk also and eats solid foods she actually is a great eater. I was not sure when I should stop. I don't pump milk I really never have I work at home so I have never really needed to. Once in a while if I go someplace I will pump but she does not have a bottle she uses sippy cups. There are times that I could go for a glass of wine or a drink but I don't. I think at this point it will be hard to wein her now that she asks for it...I usually only feed her from the breast in the early morning maybe once during the day and then again at bedtime. If she wakes in the night I will also do it. Does anyone think that is wrong. I never breastfeed my other daughter so I never had to wein her from me.

Emma is still nursing twice a day (wake-up and bedtime). We don't really have any plans to stop, but I think she is losing interest which is just fine. She'll sip a bit and then squirm down from my lap and then sometimes she'll want back up for more and sometimes not. We're thinking about trying for #2 in the new year, and I'd like to be done with her nursing, but there is no pressure on her to stop. I think it's great if we can keep nursing our little ones as long as they'd like! :)

My daughter is 13 months and she is still nursing. I was thinking about weaning her at a year but decided to just keep on since she loves it so much and is such a healthy baby (I really think breastfeeding has contributed to this) She can go quite a long time during the day without feeding from me( some days she still wants it 2-3 times during the day due to teething) She has her 3 meals and snacks in the day as well. The feedings that are the most important to her are to nurse as soon as she wakes up in the morning and right before bedtime at night. She will drink whole milk, juice, and water from sippy cups. I have some mommy friends from Church who have been very nice and supportive of me still breastfeeding and my hubby loves that I do this for my daughter, but lately my mother in law and a few others have made comments like "Isn't a year enough?" "Why are you still doing it?" It's my decision and as long as my husband is for it as well as me and the baby I will continue to breastfeed. I figure she will gradually eliminate feeding after feeding until she stops altogether, hopefully before she is 2 :)

My son is 13 months and he loves brestmilk. I assume it gives him a chance to be close to me, ahe he loves bonding with me. He doesn't drink properly though, he would just take a few sips and then wanna play with my nipple and then take a few sips and get off my lap. However the moment I put the breast away he will want it again and will say "nanna, nanna" till I give it to him. This seems to be tiring me out and makes me feel frustrated at times. Am I being selfish to feel frustrated, or is it totally normal. Especially since he has 3 meals a day, plus snacks, a juice bottle and a milk bottle.

Way to go mommies!!! I thought I was all alone. I am still nursing, about 3-4 times a day, including night time. I LOVE it. I don't want to stop anytime soon. My son is not a fan of whole milk, and so he only drinks water in a sippy cup. He also doesn't like to eat in his high chair, only when he is running around. Probably because he has just learned to walk. Oh well. we will figure it out. And he has also been nursing more and sleeping less these last few weeks. But good for all you women!!!

I have no set date to ween my son, I was originally planning on 1 yr. He's not a fan of whole milk, so he gets to keep his boob, until he decides he's ready! He nurses 5-6 times a day, lately it's been more. He doesn't seem to want to eat his food in his highchair anymore, but he will gladly accept food while he's on the floor...so that's something we are struggling with. He will probably be going to daycare soon (if I land this job) & he will have to eat in a highchair there, as well as not get to be w/ mommy all day like he's used to. He won't take breast milk in a sippy (or anywhere except from the boob), so he'll get water & whole milk when he's in DC.

Isaac is still nursing, and my goal is to let him wean when he's ready, not set date. Right now he probably nurses at least 4 times a day - morning, after daycare, bedtime, and whatever he wants at night. He's actually been nursing a lot more this last week, since he seems to be teething. Usually though, he eats family meals really well.

We are still going strong with no real intentions of stopping entirely. She is still nursing anywhere from 3-5 times a day. Some of those are more comfort nursing sessions over anything else. Right now I'm just taking it day by day. No real definite cut off date yet. I've introduced cow's milk to her but am letting her take the lead as far as that is concerned as well. I never thought I would go beyond the 1 year mark but am so proud that I did!
