LOL!! My baby girl sucks her fists too! She still likes her "suckie" but I even find her licking that sometimes before she puts it in her mouth! Dont worry, it seems to be pretty normal!!

It's completely normal and self-soothing, and it's part of discovering their body, just like they might start staring hard at their hands at this age, it's hilarious.

Much less hilarious if they start sucking their thumb, though, you might want to get them rid of this habit asap. My first son just turned 3 and still hides in his bedroom to suck on his thumb -- cause he knows he's not supposed to. At 3 months he stopped wanting the pacifier and I never tried pushing it on him; it was so handy for him to just suck on his thumb, and I didn't have to get up to give him his pacifier back in his bed! But as handy as it is, it can have bad effects on your kid's teeth's development (the real ones) so if you don't want to have to pay hundreds for an orthodontist in 10 years, I suggest you keep an eye on that fist sucking so it doesn't turn into thumb sucking. I'm doing it with my 3mos old baby; whenever he twists his fist enough to catch the thumb, I pull it out and give him the pacifier instead. Sometimes he spits it out, but I can usually outstubborn him and he ends up keeping it after a little while.

My daughter does this. She even tries to get her fist in her mouth over the top of her binky. It is pretty funny!

My baby does it, too. It's so funny because he makes these loud smacking noises that we can hear from the other side of the house.

My son loves his fists as well. About 2 weeks ago, he started sucking his thumb...won't take a paci anymore. And he sucks so hard his thumb is all red and chapped.

My 12 wk old son has been sucking on his fists since the first week. It's a self-soothing mechanism. I think it's adorable that he tries to shove the whole entire first in his mouth. His new thing is trying to get both fists in his mouth at once!! It's so cute

My daughter was sucking her fist before we even got out of the operating room!! You can always try a pacifier with her if you don't like her sucking on her fists. It's pretty normal for them to put everything in their mouths though and sucking is a way they self soothe.

My little girl has pretty much been sucking her fists since she was in-utero haha. She does it when she is hungry or wants something to suck on.

I think so. My 2 month old is doing it like crazy. At first we thought she was beginning to teethe, but now we're just thinking it's a self-soothe sort of thing. Interesting how she tries to shove her whole fist in her small little mouth!

thanks for the replay Amanda! I love watching my daughter discover her hands! She has been sucking her hands for about 2 weeks.

absolutely! it means she's discovered her hands & she is exploring them. that is the way babies learn about things, by sticking them in their mouths. also, it's a great self-soothing technique for them. my 9week old just started doing it last weekend. i love it.
