How often and how much are you feeding your baby?

What is your baby's feeding (milk and solids) schedule? What is the amount, when, and how often?

My 9mth baby girl has a hard time drinking her milk. It takes me 30min to 1hr to feed her the whole bottle because she drinks a bit then turns away repeatedly. It drives me nuts. Below is her feeding schedule:

8am - Wake up to Breast feed (BF)

8:30am - 4oz solids (banana, cereal, and yogurt)

9:30-11am- NAP time

11:30am - 6oz of formula

1pm - 3-4oz solids (egg yolk, fruit, cereal)

2:30-4pm - NAP time

4pm- 6oz of formula

5pm - 3oz solids (chicken rice vegetable)

7pm - 6-7oz of Breast milk in a bottle

8pm - Beditme.

Typically she drinks milk 4 times a day and eat solids 3 times a day. She is a small baby, weighs approx 17lbs.

Am I feeding too often? Should I cut down one of her milk feedings?

i too am not sure the exact amout he has but this is what we do

5am wake, 7oz bottle but doesnt always drink it all, then he goes back to sleep.

7.30 am wake

8am baby cereal with baby juice

9.30 nap

10.30 ish snack, bananna or some other fruit.

12pm lunch, sandwich (cheese spread/cheese/jam/ham) or beans on toast and a yogurt.

1pm ish nap

2.30 wake,

3pm snack baby biscuits/baby crisps something like that or a fruit pot.

5pm dinner, normally whatever we are having.

6.30pm 7oz bottle (has as much as he wants, not always all of it)

7pm bedtime

He also has a drink which i keep refreshed that he helps himself to thro-out the day.

I use to stress so much about how much milk he was having, but i now realise he has his own mind and he will have as much as he wants, you could try and cut down on her milk and see what happens. Luan was taking a while to drink his milk also and i realised that he didnt really want it or he would jump at the chance for having it and drink it all down so i stoped his 3rd bottle and as far as i know he hasnt looked back....he much prefers to help himself to food now lol. x

I don't really have a set schedule, I go off of his hunger cues now and I've realized he can't always wait until we eat - so I make sure dinner is always as a family and the same time every night.

But this is what a typical day consist of:

6:30am - Wake up, 5oz. bottle
8:30am - Breakfast, sometimes banana puffs, sometimes oatmeal, sometimes scrambled eggs, sometimes quiche, whatever I make really
9:00am - Nap
11:30am - Lunch, Usually a sandwich - ham-n-cheese, turkey-n-cheese, PBJ, and a fruit and veggie.
1:00pm - Snack, fruit, veggies, and a cookie
2:00pm - Bottle, 3-4oz. depending on how much of his 5oz. bottle he drinks, sometimes all of it
3:00pm - Nap Time
5:00pm - Snack, puffs
7:00pm - Dinner, whatever we eat, plus veggies and fruit
8:00pm - Snack with daddy - usually a pop tart or yogurt ice cream
9:00pm - Bed Time

I quit bed time bottles when all he would drink is 2oz. of it and then throw the bottle. He's weened himself off of the formula, so I don't worry about doing it myself. He's only doing maybe 10oz. in a day, but I give him water throughout the day, and he gets 1 small cup of juice a day. I also make a lot of things we eat because I don't like all the high fructose corn syrups and preservatives and stuff in foods. Luckily Gerber makes some good snacks that are healthy and without all that stuff in it.

When my son hits 11 months, I will start adding milk to his formula to prepare him for weening completely off the formula and bottles.

My son is 10 months and he weighs 23lbs. I'm not sure how much he weighed for his 9 month checkup, I couldn't go in we are waiting for my husband's insurance to get activated.

Quoting Kitt:

Thanks Julie. I just feel so uneasy when my girl drinks less because I'm reading all these articles that indicates that they should have 24-32oz of milk. Considering my baby is so tiny I want her to drink as much as she can. I guess I should only use that info as a guideline and that every baby is different. As you mentioned I should go by her cue.

Oh, I know just how you feel.  I was always obsessively counting how many ounces my son was drinking everyday and looking at the charts and getting concerned because he wasn't drinking enough.  But when I mentioned it to my pediatrician (who is wonderful, knows my son well, and gives great advice) she didn't even blink about it and said not to worry.  I've been able to relax about it more now, and sometimes my son will only drink half of his 6oz bottles.  So I'll put formula in his sippy cup at meals, or just make sure he's getting lots of healthy fruits and veggies and other sources of dairy.  You could always add a daily multivitamin, too.

Hey ya,

again, I dont know exact amounts for solids cos he just eats what he wants really but here goes:

8.30 Wake up and 6oz formula

9.00 breakfast (reddybrek/fruit/toast)

10-12 Nap

13.00 lunch (sandwiches or pasta/couscous)

14.30 (ish) Nap

15.30 (ish) 6oz formula

17.30 Dinner (whatever we are having or a jacket potato/jar, veg, fruit and a yoghurt)

18.00/18.30 Bath

18.45 6oz formula

19.00/19.15 bed

He is a bigger baby boy though not sure what he weighs but I know that he is big! He was last weighed at 20lb but that was at least a month ago!

I think its a bit of trial and error really..she will tell you if she is still really hungry/thirsty.

xxxx

I don't know the exact measurements of how much solids my son eats (I just feed him how much he wants), but here is how my schedule goes. And my son is also a smaller baby, 17lbs 11oz at our 9 month well check last week...

6:30am wake up and 6 oz bottle

8:30am breakfast, fruits and cereal

9:00am nap and 6 oz bottle when he wakes up, and fingerfood snack

12:30pm lunch, usually veggies

2:00pm nap and 6 oz bottle or yogurt when he wakes up

6:00pm dinner, usually whatever we're having put through the blender if needed

6:45pm bath, pajamas, breathing treatment and asleep by 7:30pm

He is also losing interest in his bottles. Sometimes if he really hasn't wanted his bottles during the day, I'll put formula instead of water in his sippy cup at mealtimes. I've also started occassionally replacing the afternoon bottle with yogurt instead. My pediatrician told me that as he starts taking less formula to make sure he gets other sources of dairy like cheese and yogurt, but no whole milk till 1 year. For finger foods, he likes small bits of bananas or cheddar cheese, or gerber puffs or cheerios.

Hope this helps, sounds like your little one is ready to start dropping bottles, just go by her cues. =)
