it started as a stuffy nose. got presciption for carbinoxamin to give 2xs a day. it gives her HORRIBLE gas and she got a phlemy cough shortly after starting it. i tried to sucction out and drops but still has the cough and it's been a week. i called when cough started and they gave me presc for sudafed which also gave even worse gas pains and i was up all day and night bc of it and so was she. should i stop giving the meds? should i just give the cough syrup? i gave both when she got the bad gas so i'm not sure. it's not like her to have this much trouble being calm and she cries all the time and doesn't want to eat as much now. HELP!

my son has a cough right now too, my doc says not to give any cold/cough meds until age 2, just keep a cold humidifier going, and even feed him in a steamy bathroom to loosen the congestion.  Also, a little saline (non-medicated) in the nose before feeding and bed if necessary.  The doc said as long as there are no signs of  respiratory distress or high fever, there isn't much they can do because 5 months is too young to medicate.

Phlegm on the lungs is in 99% of cases causing the cough, it's your bodies way of expelling the build up. The lining on the lungs get irriatated and gives you the urge to cough. If it gets over 2 weeks and she still has the cough, she will need antibiotics as it will most likely be some form of bacterial infection.

I would have her checked for a sinus infection. That could be causing the bad cough.

Thank you so much! It sounds like good advice. I was a little concerned about this doctor anyway. Thanks again and I agree about the vomit.

Stop giving her the meds. Don't give cough syrup, all they do is prolong the illness by surpressing the body's natural way of getting rid of the crap on the chest. Sudafed?! Get a new doctor! She sounds like she has a cold/flu. Which needs common sense, not anti-biotics. Take her to a different surgery today for your own peace of mind. Give her panadol and keep up her fluids. Don't worry about the food, make sure she is having her bottles and water. That all she needs at the moment. At least she's not vomiting. Good luck!
