Not getting the hang of solids

My son just turned 9 months and I am trying to get him started on peices of food, like fruits meats etc. Allthough when I try to give him such peices he either just plays with them or will try them and not chew enough and seems to choke on it! I am getting worried that I don't even want to try anymore, but I know it's something he needs to learn. Anyone have any good transitioning ideas? I have tried the stage 3 food (8+mon.) thats is just mashed up with little pieces of food in it, but he spits out the pieces and gags and just isn't interested.

there are these little gerber puff things that i "trained" my son to eat with. i don't think of them as real food, just practice foor for eating solids he can pick up. he still only makes food into his mouth about 60% of the time, but it's better than at first! (10%!). good luck!
