Transitioning from cereal to baby foods.

Our doctor was vague when he discussed starting Wyatt on foods. He did say, introduce new things slowly and keep track of reactions. Start with cereal. How long do I wait before I switch from rice cereal to the fun stuff? I have an appointment in a few weeks and don't want to call for what seems like such a small questiong. Any advice? (Wyatt is 5 months 2 weeks and has been on rice cereal for 3 weeks)

I'm about to start solids (cereal, then veggies/fruit) and I'd heard to do cereal for 1-2 feedings a day for a couple weeks.  Then you can start introducing veggies first (if you start with fruits, they are sweet so the kids will gobble them up but then may refuse the veggies when introduced later on).  Only do one new food at a time to check for allergic reactions (rash, watery eyes, runny nose, diarrhea) waiting 3-4 days inbetween.  Oh, I've also heard you should start with yellow veggies (squash, carrots) before green ones (peas, green beans) because the yellow ones are easier to digest.

Our doctor was along the same lines at Amie, do cereal for at least a month.  Not only do they need to learn how to eat, their stomaches need to learn how to digest the cereal.  After a month then start with veggies, wait 4-5 days before you introduce new.  If there is something that they don't like wait a couple weeks and re-introduce it.

Thanks very much for this! I had been wondering the same things as Nicole.

Our doctor said to establish a morning and evening cereal routine before starting her on baby food.  I started the evening cereal around 4 1/2 months and added the morning cereal at 5 months.  I plan on starting the first fruits at six months and the doc did say to wait 3-5 days before introducing a new food once you start the fun stuff, so you can track any reactions.

HTH!

I've heard 3 days as well.

It is recommended to wait 3-5 days to see if there is allergic reactions, then you would know what food is causing it. I only wait 3 days to introduce new foods. I have been feeding My Alex masshed banana, carrot, homemade applesauce. Basically anything that is fairly mild in taste.

If he doesn't like the new foods then just try them again in a couple days. It is alot of fun when you give them new foods the look on their litle faces is priceless!

Good luck with it.
