My 16mths old is a very talkative girl. She'll try to say anything up to 3 syllables. she can pronounce bicycle, vegetable, peek-a-boo very clearly... She can also strings 2 words at the moment. Can count 1-10 by her own (& even count from whichever numbers i say) & can say A to E. PD says she's a fast learner. Try singing & talking to him/her more often. tat'll help to develop their speech abilities faster. :)

My 17mo son has 2 clear words up and hi. He has 2 signs please and thank you. He says ease for please. He also clicks his tongue when he is hungry. That's it he doesn't really talk. Once in a while he will mimic a word but then we don't here it again. He is very active but has no interest in talking. He won't even say the words he knows if you ask him to he just grins at you and goes silent. Meh he'll get there eventually my older son isn't much for talking either.

I know how different they all are so have no worries! My first child said "wasat?" (for whats that?) as her first word(s). My 17 month old's first word was "Hi". Now she says up, no, hi, wasat, this, fish, apple, wow, baba, mama, dada, sissy, yum, backpack (courtesy of Dora), taku (for thank you), and whole bunch of nonsense. She reads books to herself and apparently she can understand herself because she reads away and turns the pages. I was worried at first because she does not say as much as her sister did, but she also doesn't seem to be lacking. I think the words they pick up on are very random and sometimes they just surprise themselves and then realize they can say something and keep saying it from that point on :)

My little girl is now 17months and she talks quiet clearly, but its like it all of a sudden just started flowing. I think once they get a grasp on some sounds then they're off and running. I must admit though that i never tended to baby talk at her much. I spoke with her and played but always in plain English.

once again, each child is a child, my daughter speaks Portuguese at home and French with the house keeper and in the day-care center, but over all, her own language, which I love to ear :) she can say aurevoir - good bye, áua - water, non - no, sayez - that's it, táli - it's there, dá - take, ... and unswer with hand gesture when we ask her age, in French, and in Portuguese

my daughter can say a handful of words like "puppy" for EVERY animal..."caca" when she goes number 2, "hi" "bye" but she speaks her own language. she really sounds like she's talking chinese or something bc she changes pitch and sounds, its funny. Alot of moms compare their children to other kids...but your child will learn to speak when they are ready, you know? As long as your kid can understand you and respond the there are no problems. I just read a post on a lady who said that her child talks alot and it makes up for the fact that the child just started walking a month prior. My daughter was walking on her own on her 1st birthday and has been non stop since then. It's just when they are ready.

Other than the standards (Mama, Dada, Paci), mine likes to sing songs. She can sing "patty-cake" and her version of Eency Weency Spider is something like " Bitty bitty SpiiiiiiiDer .......down......rain.....out....up.....sun......rain.....gin (again)". She even does the hand gestures for spider, rain, and up comes the sun. - She also randomly sings a counting song but the only numbers she says (that I can understand) is "five, six, seven, eight"

not all kids start talking right away..a lot of them just watch the people around them and soak everything in..then one day, a million words and sentences will be flowing out of their mouths..my son says things like mama-dada-ian(his brother ethan)-nana(banana)& (grandma) ag up (flag up)-up-down-no-yes-juice-milk-ippy(sippy)..but you can tell when everyones talking he is watching our mouths move..all kids are different tho..you can have a silent kid who one day start speaking full sentences..most just do what they want to do

My son started walking at 6 months and started talking about 9 months and now we can't shut him up! Most of what he says we completely understand. He asks for different foods without seeing them, although he does have a few pronunciations that are a little off, but I love the way he says them so we're not correcting all of them I want to enjoy them while I can. For tomatoes, he says meemos. He gets more words every day and when he tries to tell you something and you understand him, he started giggling. I'm guessing because he's so excited someone understands him. He understands so much. You ask him, "go get your coat" and he does. It's amazing how much he's learning every day!

My twins were born at 30 weeks, so developmentally they are supposed to be functioning as 14 month olds not as the 16 month olds that they are. I have the same concern since one of my twins says dada and mama clearly and says eat (eee), and well as trying to say thank you. My other twin used to say dada, eee and mama every now and then but recently I have noticed that she has just stopped talking. When I bring it up to anyone I’m told that I worry to much. My thought is since there my first kids aren’t I supposed to worry. So its always nice to hear from moms who have the same concerns I do and who’s kids are at the same place as mine, I know they understand the language since they both follow directions very well and are very easy going kids, I’m just wondering if I should be getting them evaluated for speech yet or not. I’d love any advice as well.

my daughter was born sept 08. french and english are spoken fluently in the home as well as sign(we have a non verbal down syndrome 4 year old) she picked up the signs like hungry, banana, hurt, tired, more, please, thank you, bath, and dog by age one. since then she has begun to favour english and sign. she is very verbal but i do not really respond to pointing or grunting. she knows her animals in all three and names of common people, as well as different foods and common activities. never more then 2 or 3 words in a row but i think signing has really reduced the level of frustration in her day to day activities and deffinately has not slowed her verbal skills.

My 16 month old can say about anything and almost everything she says is understandable. There are somethings that I haven't figured out yet but not many. All I have to do is say something to her once and she says it back. She can probably say near 100 words if not more and is constantly saying new words. This week some of her new words are toast, blue's clues, Dora, and poptart. She has quite a few phrases she says too, like what you doing, hey where you at, bye see ya later and etc. But of course like most kids her age (I think) her all time favorite words are Mamma, daddy, sissy, memaw, papa, and NO (i think she says this one the most.) The cutest new thing I think she has said lately is when she crawls onto the couch and stands up and I tell her to sit down, then she says sit down, so then I try to resort to something more serious so I say ONE and before I can get anything else out of my mouth she says TWO, THREE and sits down. Its cute. But I think all children develope and come along at their own rate. Give them time, they'll get there!!!!

I can't believe how much Natalia is talking now. She is learning both english and spanish. She is 16 months 3 weeks and 29 pounds. This is her vocabulary:

allalla = Natalia, titi = bottle, agua = water, ju = juice, craqui = cracker, nana = banana, boo = book, pampa = pamper/diaper, alco = talco/powder, carcoo = cartoons, papos = shoes, pooh = poop, pipi = pee, mami = mommy, papi = daddy, mamaw = grandma, fee = feet, hi = hi, bye = bye, papa = food, baby = baby, jaqui = jacket, caqui = cookie, ewww = gross, me = mine, wawau = doggie, ba = ball, ma = more, boo = boo, twee = three, no = no, quiqu = thank you, oh oh = oh oh. I think that's pretty much all she says. She is bilingual, English and Spanish. I speak to her all in Spanish and my husband all in English. That's 32 words (about 1/2 in Spanish and 1/2 in English), but I have not heard her yet put words together. She also follows directions really well and is also a chatter box as she tries to repeat almost everything. She also babbles off some as if she's talking back! She tries to count to 3, but only says twee!

My daughter says; Mommie, water, eat, hi, hello, bye, auh man, Zazu (her puppies name), baby, ball, hot, bird. She has been nodding and shaking her head 'yes' and 'no' for a while and when appropriate. We sign and she knows; Thank You, please, hurt, cheese, milk, more, bird, finished, picnic, car, cookie, cold, hot, puppy/dog, ball, cereal, eat, good, like, baby, change, hungry, airplane, dog, water, all gone, swing and when i sing and sign the ABC's she moves her hand to mimic me and when we get to Z she claps. When I sing ABC and stop she makes the tune sounds like she is going 'DEF' ... We use flashcards for the words that she knows the signs for .. our flashcards have English, Spanish, and Kiswahili on them. When I speak to her in Spanish or Kiswahili she responds in sign. She pics the phone up and 'talks' then says 'bye' and hangs it up. She is funny. And a LOT OF WORK! One nap a day (2-3hrs IF I hold her) and full-force all the other time.

We also have a TON of non-English, non-Spanish, and non-Kiswahili words.

My son talks HEAPS....only about 10% is legible English though lol, I'd love to sit here and brag about my son knowing thousands of words, but honestly, He can only say Mum, Dad, Uh-oh, Oh-no,bird (More of a berrr lol) dog (Well, OG), cat, car, light (more of a larl...but close enough haha) duck etc, which of course there is nothing wrong with. I'd say it was on average...my doc tends to avoid saying the "Hm....he's a little behind" or the "OH WOW 3 year olds aren't even doing that yet"...he prefers to stick to the 'he's doing great...doing wonderfully at his own pace.

Gray decided a few months back that when asked a question such as "Do you want a bite?" that she would either laugh if she did want it or cry if you hadn't guessed right. I have two older daughters who were much more vocal (phrases like "need help" at a year old). I've decided that Gray wants to stay my baby forever and that's why she hasn't taken an interest in speaking. J/K!!! Once she realizes she gets what she wants a heck of a lot quicker with words, then she'll use them

Macy's words are getting a lot clearer now. Her "yeah" has turned into a "yes". Other things are sometimes perfect, and other times wrong! Lol! For example, sometimes she'll say, "Elmo", but if she says it out of the blue, w/o someone saying it first, she'll say, "Elbow". I think it's funny! Anyway, she says Mommy, Momma, Daddy (which used to be Dada), Abby (Cadabby), baby, juice, sweet, thank you, please, I wanna bite, ball, shoes, bye bye, I wanna go bye bye, I love you (her new thing is "I love you TOO!), tee tee, poo poo (sometimes she just says, "shoo-wee"!), potty, Macy, wow, cool, yours, mine, kitty kitty, see you later, see ya, night night, book, hot, cold......I can't sit here forever, but she's doing pretty good. I stay at home and work with her a lot, though, so that's definitely a big help. I also sell the "Your Baby Can Read" dvd sets, and we've been working with that for a couple of months. My 16 month old can only say very few words, majority are words like mumma, pa, dada, nana.. he doesnt say much else.. he recognises what we say.. like wheres your nose wheres your feet etc. but cant say them himself.. and if we say up or down he points.. majority of the time he just points to what he wants.. we have recognised that "good" means he wants a drink.. thats about it.. My infant welfare nurse told me the more you baby talk them then harder it is for them to learn (however sometimes i cant help it hehe) and also if you read to them alot it helps them start to recognise and talk alot more.. so maybe give that a go.. But just remember little bubs develop different things in different orders.. My way of thinking is the longer they dont talk the longer they dont talk back lol.. I am sure your little one is doing just great and at their own pace!!

Yes repetition is key, especially if you are trying to teach a certain word. I have a nephew who is exactly a month older than my son, and he doesn't talk much yet either, but he's been walking/running since he was about 9 months old! Most children develop only a certain skill set or two at a time, some later than others. I would NOT be worried if your baby/toddler cannot do something yet. My son has been babbling since he was about 7 or 8 months (words around 10ish-11), but he didn't even ATTEMPT to CRAWL until he was 11months, and he was just starting to cruise along furniture when he turned 1 in sept. Every child is different. My mother had 5, and we all learned the same things at completely different times in our infant/toddlerhood!

My son says a few words like thank you, dada, bye, and thomas. It is mostly what you say because all they are doing is copying your words. It may not always sound like a word but you can sometimes hear them mimic your voice and syllables. just be sure to talk a lot and reapoeat yourself and them. It all comes in time.

When daddy gets home from work he shouts "HI DADDD". He will also ask at times "Where yooo goin" when we walk away, or "What ya doin" when he sees us typing or cooking etc. He also says words such as, Done, No, Yas(yes), Ba(thirsty), Good, Tenk oo (thank you), cracker, and Go!.
