hi ladies,

So my daughter Sophie drinks from a bottle (and also is breastfed in the morning and occasionally more often on the weekend), but she is drinking breast mikl (I pump). I am told from my speech therapist friend that the sippy cup is 'bad' for mouth etc. I also know people who say it's better just to start on the cup. Anyone out there start the cup yet and if so how? any good recommendations on kind of cup? As it is she sometimes coughs when too much milk goes down and is on a slow flow nipple now.....

thanks!

laurie

I also breast-feed my now 10 month old. But he is weaning himself off on his own, only taking the breast in the early morning. I started giving him a cup at about 4 months. He did very well but I was not consistent with it. But since you are looking for the "best" cup, I found the shot glass to be the right size for my son to tilt and not spill too much. I started giving him a sip-pee cup consistently for the last 3 weeks and found his consumption to be up. I started with the nuby soft tips as my son had had an issue with chewing instead of sucking since birth. (long story, and I'm glad he did over come it in order to breast feed) I switched him over to the firmer one just today and had great success. I wish you the best and want to remind you, that we need to follow our own instinct because there is always conflicting "expert" advice. Good Luck P.S. I found the the shorter cups with the handles are easiest.

I'm starting to ween my 10-month old off the bottle, which her doctor said he wants her off the bottle by a year. I use the munchkin sippy cups with the soft spout, I tried the Nubys but the top sucks in and collapses Munchkin are much better. I have never heard anything negative about using a sippy cup

I start just giving my son water out of a glass. I tried sippy cups but found that they put so much stuff in them to stop the flow and messy that he might as well have been drinking from a bottle. Yes it is messy and sometimes you get water or milk on you but its that life with a baby. I am now trying to teach him to drink from a straw.

I used the Nuby cup, starting at 6-8 months with both of my kids. It has a soft silicone spout which feels more like a bottle nipple, and when they gum down on it the liquid comes out, so it's easy to learn to use. Several of my friends have had success with their babies throughout the years with this cup as well. Both of mine learned quickly on it. I switched my daughter (older child) to the Nuby straw cup at 11 months, and just the past few weeks started my 10 month old on it. He had a hard time getting the concept at first, so I used my daughters juice box and squeezed the liquid up a little each day for like 2 weeks, so he understood what a straw was for(you could also use the brand Take and Toss and put water in it to squeeze it up the straw). Then I introduced the Nuby straw cup by holding it upside down and squeezing the straw so the water would come out a little, and he grasped onto the concept and now will drink 1/2 cup of water from it. I have worked with many speech therapists and they have told me the same thing about the sippy cup; however it is a nice transition cup prior to starting the straw cup. If you use it for a few months as a transition it shouldn't affect teeth or speech in any major way, at least that's what they told me. Hope this helps and good luck.

I did, I use the ones with the soft tops, and have been using them for about two months now during my son's meal time. I started out with about 3 ounces of warm water since my son hates cold liquids, and he did ok with it, spitting out of course since it was new. Now, he is getting his formula in his sippy cups with his meals. The key is to start with an open mind, it's going to be messy and its hard to find the style that suits your child best. My youngest son wouldn't even put the kind that my odler son adored. I would just go to a chain store and pick up maybe two or three different versions and test them.
