Andrew will be 1 September 21st. He is NOT talking..I mean he babbles and stuff and I can tell him to get or look for certain things and he does. He has been walking good for months and I thought he was developing pretty well, but he has not been saying one word! Here lately he goes ma-ma-ma-ma, but still no solid words. Is this okay? All the articles I read says that he should already have said up to 5-10 words!!

my son was 1 on the 3rd sep and only says a few words but his main word is da-da. i wouldnt worry about it to much as every child is different. as long as he is developing as normal then there is nothing to worry about. good luck

My daughter turned 1 on Sept 7th and just said her first word last week, which was Ka! (meaning the cat) LOL

My daughter won't walk more than 4 steps by herself, but will stand next to me and hold my hand and walk as long as i do. However she has been saying "mama" and "daddy" since 10 months. At 11 months she starteed saying "dog" and 12 months was saying "duck", "cat", "again", "all done" and "more". I was told that girls develop language first and boys tend to do the physical stuff first. I wouldn't be worried, the ages are only a general idea of a time to expect the milestones to occur.

Really, 1-3 "words" is a bit much for most 1 yr olds. Just because your child has a birthday does not mean they need to start walking/talking/going potty/ect. They are still babies and will learn in time. Some babies will learn before others and thats fine but don't push your child as this only leads to frustration. As long as your child can babble and make different sounds s/he is just fine as far as talking is concerned.

If you are honestly worried about it talk to your childs doctor but honestly I don't think there is a need to at this age.

Every child is different! Don't worry about it! My son has been using a few words for months now, and every so often we here a random word that he has yet to repeat! And he babbles and sings all day long! But he has only just started toddeling a few feet here and there - no steady walking yet. Where as his cousin, who is exactly a month older than him, was walking at 7 months, and still doesn't talk!

evrery baby has their strengths and weakneses. my son was born sept.16/2008 and he sat up and walked later than all my friends babies....but can he ever talk! he says "i love you" all the time, my mom asked him how he was over the phone and he said "okay...i tired", sometimes if i give him something he likes he says "i like these". hes got a huge vocabulary but i havnt met any other babys that talk like him....it must be cuz im such a chatterbox lol. but like i said he was slower at sitting and learning to walk and stuff. they all have their strengths and weakneses

My daughter just turned one and there are a few words that she says that we can recognize, or at least we think we recognize. I wouldn't worry too much about it as they all develop at different rates. As in, my daughter has only been walking for about three weeks.

My son who is now 5and 1/2 didn't say his first clear word untill almost 2. but it progressed very fast afetr that, now he doesn't shut up! He is a very smart 5 year old! I also have a little girl who will be one on Sept 22 and she has said, maybe 1-3 words, not too clear, but I don't worry too much about speech as long as she babbles and is otherwise healthy.

My son turned one on the 16th, and he says 'dis', 'what', 'whatdis', and 'light' haha. No mama or daddy. He just points at everything and says 'dis'.

I wouldn't really worry about it, he'll be talking your ear off in no time!! :)

They say that boys talk later. My son just turned 1 on Sept. 3rd, but he can say 8 words - but he doesn't "always" say them. And out of those 8 words he can only associate 3 of them with the correct object. Otherwise he babbles most of the time and points at everything and goes "uh" and wants me to name the objects.

My son will be one on the 25th and he isn't talking either. He's very active and almost walking by himself. I read to him and they have reading in his daycare, I think he'll talk
soon, I'm not worried. You're not alone. If you like comedy, listen to Katt Williams, "single father", it's so funny and it's not about fathers but parents in general and loving whatever stage they're in. You'll get a good laugh and feel better.

Mine was 1 on the 11th of Sept. & he's not talking yet either. He babbles, but no definite words. Don't worry, he's just fine, you can try reading to him more, so he hears more words, which might encourage him. The articles you've read are averages, not anything that is concrete, those #'s are high, it is extremely easy to lie with statistics!!

I wouldn't worry yet, 5-10 word at age 1 seems extreme! My sons is 1 on September 22nd and he's only got Mamma and Dadda down. He only rambles mamma dadda he hasn't associated the word with the actual people yet.

my son Branson is 19mon and he isn't talking yet either, but in my situtation he was a preemie born at 24wks weighting only 1lb 12ozs, but the doctor said he still should be talking by now ,he say mama and dada and does a little babbling and he's not walking yet but trying, so i know how you feel . for some kids it take them a little longer, but it's ok.

I was worried about this too, and online research didn't help! I asked this question in another forum and all I got was "Talk to your nurse, my child has a vocab of 40 words at 1", which I think is completely over exaggeration . The nurse said as long as at lest 1, only 1-3 (Not 40!) word/s is somewhat clear.

Quoting Julie:

My son will be one on the 29th, and his first (and only) word is "screw." He can identify every screw holding his changing table together. How weird is that for a first word? He says "mama" and "dada" but I'm not always sure he is actually referring to us, he might just be babbling. It sounds like your son is on the right track if he is recognizing words that you say; if you've ever learned a foreign language, I'm sure you remember that you could understand it better before you could actually speak it yourself very well.

Aww!! Screw!?? That's so adorable that he can point it out too!

Thanks alot everyone! that made me feel alot better. I was having my worries, but my mom was looking it up saying something could be wrong. IT's weird how out of all our babies not talking it is BOYS that are having trouble lol. But as usual girls do things first then boys on some things. It's too cute.

I didn't know they were supposed to have 5-10 words either, mine knows mama and dada and he calls his brother ACK (Zach), but nothing else. I wouldn't worry about it as long as he is babbling...I mean he may know lots of words we just can't undersand what he is trying to say. My neice didn't say her first word until she was almost 15 months old, but she is 4 now and not developmentally delayed at all. He will talk when he is ready I am sure.

Its like with anything in their deloplmental stages, they will learn at their own pace. Boys tend to learn things slower than girls, thats just how it is. He is making sounds and recognizing objects which is very good. If you are worried bring it up with your son's pediatrian but more than like the dr won't be worried at this point in time. He sounds like he's developed well up until this point with walking, ect so I'm sure he's doing just fine!!!

By the way...the 5-10 words thing is just statics, its very rare for 'most' babies to be saying anywhere near that many words and a lot of times when they do is the parents mistaking sounds they make for words...i.e., ma-ma, da-da, ba-ba. IMO those aren't real "words" they are sounds baby can make that lead up to them saying words, those are the only "words" my son can say except for "fish" (lol) and having a 5yr old daughter I'm perfectly fine with my son not talking yet! LOL

I've never heard anyone say babies should have 5-10 words by age one. I usually see something like 1-2 words being typical. However, my son doesn't have any words, and he turned one on the 11th. He babbles and communicates with sounds, but no words. I'll be discussing it with our pediatrician, but I'm not really worried. Babies all develop at their own pace.

Adriaan also turn 1 on September 29th. He is also not talking solid words yet, but there is no need to worry, as every child develops differently. With my first son he started talking solid words at about 11 months, but as said before - every child develops differently. There is nothing wrong with your son not talking solid words yet, as in some books they state that children only start talking solid words by plus minus 13 to 14 months. I am a bit worried, because Adriaan is not walking yet, but he is crawling!!!

He is just fine. My son, who will be 1 on the 19th does not even say mama he just babbles and shouts at me when I tell him to stay out of the kitchen when I'm not in there. You have probably heard this a million times but every child developes at their own rate and you know that he understands some words so I wouldn't worry. Alex has not started walking yet and I am not worried about it he will do it when he is ready.

Also these are boys we are talking about -little men. Most boys probably will not have the vocabulary that little girls do. ( just to clarify I am speaking in general)
