should there be any thing in a kids bedroom other than a bed an blankets

The only things I have in my kids bedroom is his bed, a dresser, a rocker and a "toy chest" aka plastic tote we keep in his closet. I find it easier to keep it clean, and more spacious and safer for him to romp and roam. Also, it makes it easier to put him into bed when he has fallen asleep on me than trying to find my way through a maze of stuff.
