Be honest. Even a two year old can understand "Daddy tried to hurt us. He has to stay away so we can be safe." You don't need to divulge details about how many times he hit/abused you, if that's what you're asking. Just be general and let him know it is for you and your child's safety. He may ask why daddy hurt you two, and you can say you don't know, or daddy's troubled, but let him know it's not right and you would never hurt him. Good luck.
