My DD is 19 months. She started following me in to the bathroom and wanted to sit on my lap as soon as she could walk. I got her a potty chair at about 12 months. She has been going in it since then. I was not pushing anything till she could vocalize that she needed to go. I would set her on the potty when I was gonna change the diaper anyway. She is now 19 months and I am still not forcing anything. She tells me when she needs to go and we go. She does the same at the sitter. I sometimes spend half the day running back and forth to the bathroom on my days off, but it is worth it. We have big girl panties and plastic pants and also use the pull ups from time to time.
Good luck

My son was completely potty trained at 2 years old, even at night!! I have worked at 2 preschools and ran my own daycare, so I have potty trained about 20 kids in the last 2 years... I would have to say that the best thing to do is when you are first starting out, set a timer and take him about every 15 min, and then start gradually moving the time up, so he gets used to the idea of having to go potty. My other bit of advise is not to use pull-ups, use real big boy underwear, and if you don't want to have to change his clothes all the time invest in plastic covers... pull ups are just a glorified diaper, and it just makes us parents lazier about it... I hope this helps. All of the kids I potty trained got the idea pretty quickly... good luck!!!

I have four little girls, and each one was potty trained at a different time. You have to look at your child and watch for signs / cues that they are ready. No matter how much you want them out of diapers, rushing it just makes everyone's life miserable, and it just takes longer in the end.
Oldest was the kind of kid who hates to be dirty- she started pulling off her diapers and telling us the second she was poopy at 18 months so we got underpants and plastic pants and she was totally potty trained by 24 months.
Second daughter is only 20 months younger than her sister, when she was about two she wanted princess panties like big sis, so we gave them to her and she was potty trained totally by two and a half.
Daughter number three is VERY busy. She was not interested in stopping what she was playing with to go in the potty. She was resistant, also she sleeps very deeply so she was four before she was potty trained and at 7 years old she still has an accident at night maybe once a month. She just sleeps really deeply and doesn't wake up in time.
My youngest daughter is firmly the "baby" and was not interested in potty training until she was three, and then it was hit or miss for nearly a year. She did not want to be in underpants, she like pull ups, and it was a fight every step of the way.
Sooo.. moral is, there is no hard and fast rule. It's normal for kids to start toilet training anywhere from 18 months to four years old. It's normal for kids to have night time accidents up until the age of 10 or so.
If and when your child is ready, my only words of advice are not to bother with pull ups except for night time. They feel like diapers, they cost a ton, and kids will just pee/poop in them because honestly, they don't feel all that uncomfortable. Just get underpants - those nice old fashioned, thick ones are fantastic. Some plastic pants are your best friend. Save the pull ups for night time when you don't want to have to change the sheets in the middle of the night.
Don't force, don't try and bribe. If you have to resort to those things it's too early. Good luck, it's an adventure!
