If your children go to daycare you can always ask the teachers there. If not ask friends or relatives for help.

I used sittercity in the past. I alos second the colleges though most college kids are looking for something more than occassionaly. Our local churches (esp. larger ones) have offered their sitter lists for small fees (or free to members). Most are high school kids that have opted on for occassional other babysitting jobs.
Are your kids school age? Are they in preschool? Ask the mamas there.

There are tons of websites where babysitters post their profiles. Some sites even do background checks on the baby sitters. Most are college students, many in ECE fields. Try googling "local babysitters" for your area. Here is one site some friends of mine have used http://www.sittercity.com/

do you have a community college near you? Try the early education department. In a smaller college the professors get to know the students more so they should be able to suggest someone. Or you could try the local high school.

An ad in the paper. Or you could put up fliers at the high schools and/or colleges near you.
