Okay so my son is 4 in 3 weeks and is still in nappies. I bought him a star chart personalised with Peppa Pig which he adores and new 'big boy pants'. I'm toilet training him as opposed to potty training him. I have been patient, let him see me use the toilet as advised and read all the books! He has done 3 (tiny) wee's in the toilet and received great praise and put stars on his chart. When the chart is filled he gets a treat which was explained to him. But he then stopped and avoided the toilets at all cost. So we are back at the beginning. I then tried the tough love approach suggested to me of putting him straight in pants and telling him the procedure of telling me he needs the toilet, going, star, done. Proving its easy and pants are comfy. He loved the comfortable pants but wee'd regardless. I patiently changed the pants and told him, next time, tell me if he needs a wee. The next time he done a poo. No telling me first, no hiding the fact, just doing it! Any suggestions would be great, feeling very stressed indeed!

NOTE:

- Please don't suggest he watches his father wee because its a boy-bonding thing because he has no father.

- Please don't point out over and over what i have done wrong, i have done it, so cant change it!

- I would be grateful for advice and to hear other horror stories because it feels like all his friends done it easily bar him and im feeling very disheartened!

Thanks very much :) :) :)

Aww thank you both :) Ive had people saying im doing it wrong and not being pushing enough and some saying im being too pushy and some are horrified that he is in nappys at this age! So thank you very much, i will see if he can see his friends do it at preschool and just let him suggest it when he is ready. Thanks again :) :)

I only have girls, but I have heard that boys take more time in learning to use the toilet. you have done very well, actually so now you just have to wait it out until he is ready. if you force them they won't do it (not saying you're forcing at all). I tried everything you did, and my daughter refused. until I decided one day to just back off and leave it alone and she started going on her own and hasn't had a problem since and she had just turned 2. Boys are stubborn in that department lol. just waiting it out is my suggestion :) and don't feel bad about anything, you've done really well, so when he is ready it'll just come to him and you won't look back. keep us posted!

My daughter is still only 8 months old but I work in a nursery so have some experience of this. I think you have pretty much done everything right and if anyone tells you otherwise they are probably on here for the wrong reasons! We sometimes have children in nappies for years and then over night it just clicks and they never have an accident or anything. We did have a little girl who fell down the toilet (well, he bottom did) and she was then petfified. She got over her fear when she saw a friend being a 'big girl' on the toilet. Maybe you son has a friend he plays with who he could watch use the toilet? If he sees friends doing it he might get the hang of it.
Anyway, hang on in there and good luck! I'm sure he'll get there sooner or later- hopefully sooner for your sake tho x
