Waking up for 3 hours in the middle of the night.

My son is almost 2 and keeps waking up around 1am and won't go back to sleep until 3am or so. This is extremely difficult on me as I go to bed between midnight and 1am. So when he wakes up, I'm exhausted and can barley keep my eyes opened.

This started about a month ago and I just don't get it. My son's bedtime is around 8pm but he normally plays the "I gotta go potty" trick for an hour or so before he actually falls asleep. I'm just at my whits end. I don't get any sleep anymore. I've tried pushing his bed time back later, but that doesn't work. He will still get up around the same time. The only thing that I have found to work is him sleeping with me, but I don't want him to do that.

He sleep in a twin bed, so I can't just "let him cry" or restrict him to that one area. And he will use the "have to go to the potty" to keep himself awake. I've seen him many of nights falling asleep on the potty, but once he gets off the potty he will refuse to fall asleep.

Any help???

coming from an insomniac - you should try going to bed sooner so when he wakes up you wont be so exhausted.

i have had insomnia since i was 9 (i'm 22 now). i go to school during the day and work at night. i adjusted my schedule so it would work well and i finally started getting sleep but just last week my supervisor decided i should be working until 2am which doesn't work! my son usually wakes up at 6am which is when i have to be up to so i can drop him off and then be to class for 8am.

i don't know your reasoning for going to bed so "early in the morning" but if you have that opportunity to be going to bed earlier you need to take it. you're not doing anything but stressing your body out and trust me, it's not worth it!

The only thing I can think of is you have to keep laying him back on his bed every time he gets off of it and do so without a word.
