My daughter is 3 and she knows how to spell her first name, but she can't write it without tracing yet.

As early as you can teach them! Kids are very repetitious and if you just keep spelling his/her name, soon you will hear them repeating you. Make a song up and sing that. You child can learn as early as 1 if they can speak well. My parents owned a day care and I worked there. I've heard my toddlers sing songs simply because daddy plays it every morning bringing them to school.

Don't worry every child is different my daughter was 3 1/2 when she wrote her name and a few months later she could write her first and last name I think it all depends on each indervidual child when she's ready to do it she will! Does she have a long name?

My daughter just turned 4 in Movember and she has been going to Headstart. What they do is make a little book with the child's name on the front. When you open it up each letter of their name is on a separate page. That way they can see each letter by its self. If anyone has the opporunity to get their child into Headstart do it. It is such a great program!!

I taught my son just after he turned 4. I had been teaching him to write his abc's since just after he turned 3 so it was easy for him. He thought it was sooo cool to learn how to write.
