Should add that I am aware that my ex was on benefits and had to be actively looking for work when I was getting the £5.00 per week (which was paid fortnightly) at the time. I know that he is back in paid work, but at the moment don't get any as he's not coming up on any searches that the Child Support Agency do for him. Just now a waiting game for him to be officially found with a paper trail and start paying again. when that will be I don't know.

I know that my ex, like a lot of absent/non-resident parents, doesn't like paying and will try his best to avoid paying altogether/more than he thinks he should. I haven't had any child maintenance off him for over a year now. Before that it was on and off to whether I would get any and the amount I got. Like others in the same situation, I don't assume that I get any maintenance off him on a regular basis. When I do, it's a nice surprise.

I have the same answer really as Beth, my ex husband pays £5 a week in total towards 3 children, not even pocket money, but he refuses to work, claims he is unfit for work (after being with him 10 years I know exactly what he is capable of doing, he is just damn right lazy).

I live in the UK, so can only answer for what happens here.

For those in jail - I don't know what the rules are.

If the absent parent is on state benefits, then a set amount gets garnished from the benefits each week and paid for child maintenance. I know that it happened to my ex and I got £5.00 per week for my three girls (in total, not each) while my ex was on state benefits. Now that he's off benefits I'm not getting any (as the Child Support Agency can't trace where he's working, though they're doing best efforts).
