Its unusual for a boy to have interest of potty training at 18mo, but not impossible. Its training of the parent that you end up having instead of the child being trained. You will end up following him around and may make it stressful on yourself and him. You may prolong the ordeal longer, and I believe it would be more beneficial to wait for him to show you signs for when he's really ready to start potty training.

Rachel I'm there right now. My son is 21 months old and when he was about 18 months we started the potty training. He's starting to recognize when he needs to go potty and will grab his groin area and every time I put him on the toilet he goes potty. Even if it's only a drop or just passing gas from straining I appauled his great success. He hasn't figured out how to excrete solid body waste in the toilet yet but we are positive he will soon. Just continue to encourage him no matter what. And never scold him or let him think he's done something wrong if he has an accident. When he does, I tell my son I'm sorry and that it was my fault. Best of luck.

if he is at all interested in the potty then he might be ready. i would recommend that once you start, dont stop, no matter how hopeless it looks. or he may take to it very well. i used to potty train at a daycare for 2 years and we would have them set on the potty every 2 hours. they eventually get it. and everytime he goes in the potty you HAVE to make a big deal about it. sing and dance and praise praise praise. he will want to keep doing it.
