My son turned 12 months today and he has not been able to eat table foods (he eats from a jar as long as its liquid form and not chunky). I am not in search of how to make him eat. I have exhausted every method and he has a terrible gag reflex when food hits his tongue. His pedi has informed me that we may have to put him in Speech Therapy so that he can learn how to properly use his tongue. I would love to hear from other Mom's whose child was late in eating. Did you use speech therapy or did your child come around by 18 months or did your pedi have you use practice skills on your child to develop his or her tongue? I would love to know that we are not alone in this as I have never actually met a Mother whose child had the same issue. Thank you.

My daughter's 11 1/2 months and when she was 9 months, she decided she didn't want baby food anymore. When she was 9 1/2 months, she got a cold, and for a week would only nurse. So after that week, she didn't like things with chunks. However, she loved chunks of chicken, bread, grilled cheese, and gerber puffs. She's just recently started accepting more things. I found out that if I take a bite out of what I want her to eat, then open my mouth and show her it in my mouth then she would eat it. Not with everything though. I would think just start slowly. Maybe try some baby food that has little chunks, or maybe something he can feed himself. I really haven't figured out how to make my daughter accept a lot of chunks either, so I'm not really sure what to tell you. I hope everything works out for you.

Thank you Katherine. My doctor did mention autism as an avenue to look at six months from now if this continues. As for food I have tried it all. Bananas, cheerios, rice, mashed potatos, goldfish, crackers, french fries, everything in the baby food isle, fruits, etc.... He is doing yogurt but only if its smooth...there can be no chuncks in it or he will not take it and he will not take the little yogurt dissolvables.

The only children I know that have this problem are autistic children and I have heard a lot of them having this.
I am NOT saying your child is autistic in any way shape or form.
It could be a texture thing, or sensory issues. I didn't know that speech therapy covered this actually. Have you tried yogurt? What about canned peaches or pears? What about eggs? I'm just trying to think of some simple foods he may like.
I bet he likes the yogurt.

Good luck!!!
