There is a cold that is going around my neck of the woods, my daughter who is four caught this and has had this horrible cough that is seeming to last forever. . It gets worse at night and she coughs so much until she gags and pukes. No fever, hardly a stuffy nose, just a bad cough.... I've used medicine which only helped for a few hours, tried a vaporizer, hot baths before bed and more, only to get some good advice from my sister who's a nurse, who has seen many kids come into the er with the same cough. She told me that if you take vicks and rub it on the bottom of the childs feet and then put socks on the child before bed, it will help. Tonight is my first night trying this, and it seems to be working wonders as i cannot hear my daughter coughing so much adn she is fast asleep. Sounds a little strange, but i thought i'd share since it seems to be working tonight

that's awesome! someone just told me about that. haven't tried it yet, but will. keeping the head elevated (sleep with 2 pillows) helps too. also put the shower on hot, close the bathroom door and windows to create a steam room. stay in steam 10-15 min. might help too. a tablespoon of honey works wonders, but can cause gagging ! good luck!

Yes it is a fact that it works, I learned it from my grandmother, who'd learned if from her's etc etc etc, not always with vaporub but with whatever you choose to use for congestion. I used it with my 3 kids and with all the ones I've had contact with since, and now my daughter uses it with her kids (and continues to use it when she has a cough as well). Another suggestion (better than cough medicine I've found) is to make up some onion syrup (sounds awful but it isn't, read on)...slice some onions layer them in an airtight jar with sugar, seal tightly and allow to sit for about a day then strain off the liquid and give a tsp whenever needed. No, it doesn't taste like onions, and will leave you able to kiss the love of your life without onion breath. It was the only thing that worked for me with the chemo cough I suffered whilst undergoing chemotherapy.

Another suggestion (again from my Grandmother's herbal) is to have halved onions placed in each room of the house particularly in the bedrooms. They absorb the germs in the house and stop colds, flu in its track. Yes there is a smell of onions but you quickly become accustomed to that and don't even notice it. I used it with all of my kids and rarely had a cold circulate around the family, and I continue to use it now, particularly when my grandkids visit with 'snotty nose' and coughs. Replace them when the onion begins to yellow or goes mouldy...you'll be surprised at how few colds last longer than a couple of days at the most or develop into a chesty cough.

That has been going around here too. The dr told us it is bronchitis. I had it too, it was terrible. I'm in my third trimester so I just waited it out. My dr told me to take expectorant and it worked wonders.

Coughs are hard for a Mom to diagnosis and the child should be seen by a doctor. This is especially important if the child has not been vaccinated for whooping cough.

My mom used to do this with us and I just thought she was weird!! I carried strep-throat when I was little and my coughs were horrid --- just like your daughter, I would cough until I threw up. Anything that I presented with a stuffy nose/cough, my mom would break out the Vick's. This is something that I still use in my adult life!

I'm so glad that your little girl has found some comfort and relief in the remedy you are trying!! You can also try giving her a half of a teaspoon of honey before bed. I know it sounds nuts but the experts have done studies on it and it is said that honey appeared to be as effective as the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. So, maybe even if you tried the honey WITH and still used the Vick's trick, she would get a more restful, uninterrupted sleep!!
