I am a stay at home mom of a 9 month old little girl. It has been a financial struggle thus far and I am looking to do something from home other than sales consulting or selling make up...does anyone have any ides or do somthing yourselves? I was thinking of baking and selling my goods but I am not sure if then I would have to technically start a "small home based business".

I am a portrait artist. I draw commission drawings of people, mostly kids. That's fun and brings in a few hundred dollars a month, not enough to live on, but it helps.

I also own some investment real estate and lease that out. I used the capital I earned when I sold the first business I built to another company (It was not an at home business, so I stopped when J was 3 to stay home with him) to buy a few houses and commercial properties. I use a property management company to handle all of my legal work, tenants, and such. The management company actually rents from me, then they rent to the tenant--so I get paid whether they have a tenant or not. I could make more if I did it all myself--they take 40% of my income (some of that goes to the taxes), but it's not worth the hassle of doing it myself. You do have to have some capital to invest or you can show your business plan to a bank and get a loan, but if you go that rout, make sure you can lease out the properties for enough to cover your loan payments and still profit.

Deana,
Be sure to check your local zoning & state laws regarding a baking business from home. I wanted to do that as I love baking cakes & people ask me to do it for them. But legally, I can't where I live. Our county requires your "baking building" to be seperate from your house or your house has to conform to some far-out regulations.
Instead I work from home as a health & fitness coach. It's supposed to be 100% online (for most with the company, it is) but I like fitness training so I do classes occasionally (especially mommy & me classes). I love teaching and since I home-school, I also tutor occasionally.
My work-at-home job now has unlimited opportunities and it is a wonderful company.
If you are going to open your own business, just check the local and state laws. And don't forget the Homeowner's Assn if you are under their rule too. It's better to find all that out than to get stuck with a fine later.
Hope this helps!

I work from home for my boss, the job I had before I got pregnant. I'm lucky to be able to do so! I also do Passion Parties, although it's on hold right now. You'd be surprised actually at how much money you can bring in doing stuff like that! And it's always a good idea to get a small business license just in case!!
