The dollar store is awesome! I've gotten plenty of craft materials there. One favorite I had for Christmas when my kids were about that age was I cut green trees out foam (the stuff that's a little thicker than paper). I put two together and punched holes along the edges except for the top 2 inches or so. The older one took yarn or the plastic string used for making braclets and laced the trees together, creating a pocket in the middle. I tied up the ends at the top to form a hanger. Each of them decorated a side with paint or stamps or stickers. We stuffed the middles with Christmas candy and gave them to relatives as presents from the kids. They still hang on their trees.

When my kids were that age, I had a large treasure chest looking box on top of our dinning room table, Inside was paper, crayons, markers, kid glue, kid scissors....and as I cleaned my house would throw things in there, that I would otherwise throw away, buttons, pieces of toys, my kids had the go ahead, whenever they wish to open the box and create.....and they did just that, all hours of the day and evening, and I felt better, that they had somethingk to do, and they were helping themselves and being creative. Good luck!

My sis-in-law showed me this great thing that she does with her kids that's economical and keeps her girls busy. She buys paint at the dollar store (finger, acrylic, whatever!) and paper plates. She then spreads out newspaper over the table and lets the girls use the paper plates as a canvas! They can paint on both sides and then you can just punch a hole in the top and they can hang it in their rooms! Both her 7 year old and 3 year old love it!

I have daughters the same age- they love craft time. Walmart has Martha Stewart crafts by kid age. We have done the pom pom animals(birds, forest and bugs) and pipe cleaner farm. I have also done tie dye shirts and painted little ceramic animals- Joann's has a kit with animals and paints. Both of my daughters are able to do some part of the craft. I have done sun catchers- the ones that are paint glue and plastic shape picture, they love doing those. Hope this helps:)
