Funny you should ask. Somone just asked me this a few weeks ago, although, I'm not really sure why. Maybe it's because my DAUGHTER'S name is Cooper. Unisex....I'm tellin' ya.....!!! Anyway, I recommend going to ask.com and typing in "famous fiction and non-fiction authors". That's what I did for her and let me tell ya.....there's a POOT LOAD of names you can take from their names.....!! That's what I did and she loved it. I found about 25 boy and girl names for her. Hemingway, Finn, Huck, Shaw, Maitland, etc.....check it out!! :P

I don't understnad why people pick certain names just to use a nickname. If you like the nickname so much, just use that. I used to get so mad when people called my son Jonathan. Its just John.

I think it depends on what the name means. My hubby and I always took that into consideration when we were naming our kids. First ask yourself if there is a certain nationality or country of origin you would like to pick from. I was always partial to Gaelic names. Then do a google search. My boys are Dylan Judah and Jordan Levi.

My husband and I as well had a hard time agreeing lol. He wanted to name our daughter Morgan, and I didn't like it because I knew he was taking it from the bottle "Captain Morgan". So I said no. He didn't like Benjamin and I LOVE Benjamin. We had lists that we had taped to the fridge throughout pregnancies, his favorite names in order of best to last, and my faves in the same order. We would spend the 9 months thinking about the names and whenever we decided we absolutely HATED one name, we walked up and just crossed it off. If our favorite changed or something grew on us we reorganized our list. In the end we agreed on Lily for our daughter and Drew for our son. :)

I kind of like Griffon, but my husband said NO WAY. We named him Thomas instead, which my second choice. :) Good thing he wasn't a girl, because I had my heart set on Ursula, and my husband hated that name! We had a hard time agreeing, can you tell? :)

Yes, my daughter we had a ton of choices for. We settled on Cecelia because she is the patron saint of music and I have a degree in music education.

@Amelia, yep basically what A Marquot said :)
I'm not trying to gang up on you or upset you here by the way...
If you are annoyed by talking to a group of women, why join a whole website full of them?
I'm not 'snotty' because you stated your opinion, i actually agree with some of what you have said, i am just shocked that you could be so rude to someone making suggestions! Why would you need to attack her?
I actually agree, some names people make up are stupid and they don't think about the fact that the child has to live with that name forever!
Nace doesn't fall into that category, its unusual but who knows, in 10 years there might be hundreds of little Naces running around lol, It may not be my first choice of a name but i can see why some might like it and i respect that, i think you should too.
If you want to argue with people about trivial things like unusual names why don't you join debating mums and save it for that? :)

I love traditional names. All the "fad" names annoy me. My kids are John, Elizabeth, and Sarah. Yeah, I know, boring!! But no one has ever mispronounced, misspelled, or been confused with their names.

My son is named Jasper and sometimes gets a confused look response. But I wanted to give him a name with character and personality. I have a good strong name that will probably stand the test of time but is boring as hell and i hated it. And it never helped me in any job interviews. I did give him a backup name, Robert, just in case he doesn't like it. We could all do like some Native Americans and name ourselves when we come of age.

Ameila. Amelia. You look like a nice enough girl. You seriously don't see how your comments make you come across? "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Nace is not nice.....stupid, made up names are flaky and no child should be subjected to going through life with one"

I would have recommended LOOKing first to see if it was a real name (it is). Where do many/most names originate anyway? Harrison - son of Harris. Fletcher - arrow maker. See? Made up at one time or another. You don't have to like them, but you needn't belittle someone for their preferences. Would you say the same for ANY name you're not personally previously aware of? There's LOTS of them out there, I'm sure.

1. Those of us rebutting you are doing so BECAUSE your post was poorly written if you did not mean to offend. (And had you written it more creatively, I bet you'd find a lot of people who really agree that many current "made-up" names, and all the weird spellings people give older names, are rather unappealing, but given time, we might not mind them at all.)

2. An appropriate, and disagreeing "opinion" would have been something like, "I admit, that's not a name I would give my child." NOT "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Nace is NOT NICE"... followed by "stupid, made up names..." yadda yadda yadda. ANY name can rub someone the wrong way, either by the simple sound or because we knew some awful person who had that name before, but chances are, we won't SAY that to someone who has just stated a preference for it because we know it's OUR issue- not theirs. Just consider your online tone of voice before you press "send". You'll find you get a much better reception that way.

You know what really bugs me about a group of women? We can only accept positive comments and have a very bad habit of getting very defensive or snotty when someone says something we don't like. I am entitled to my opinion regardless of whether it is positive or negative. I just wish that some parents would give a little more thought to the names they choose to give to their children...a good strong name that has maybe stood the test of time and will take them through life. I have said it before and I will say it again...a cute name is fine for a toddler, but it's not going to be so cute when the child is an adult applying for a job

Atticus I know its a really old name but I love it. I also like Alighieri (yes as in Dante Alighieri) I know its a last name but i'm part italian so it runs well with my heritage

I named my son Brenton... Went through a baby name book & highlighted names that I liked and names that ha liked, then went through marked off ones one of us could not deal with then narrowed down the ones we did. Until we got it close enough we found the one that we had to have.

wow amelia, that was really nasty and uncalled for!
Although i may agree with you that some made up names aren't nice(and are rather cruel lol), i think nace is actually a real name, not something she just made up.
The great thing about naming your children is that it is YOUR choice, and Jennifer just suggested some names that she likes :)
Farrah who started this can either chose it or knock it back, its up to her, doesn't really matter either way but at least names like nace brings some variety to the page :D
my daughters name is Ceili pronounced 'kaylee' i suppose you hate that too? lol!

Amelia you may not like a name but how about using some diplomacy and not being quite so harsh its a personal choice and its not as if its a name you have to use yourself!!!
