Hello ladies,

have any of you experienced a plugged duct? what did you do to cure it? how long did it take to get your normal milk supply to return? does this effect the opposite breast? Please any personal experiences would be great - as i am a new mom.

I had a blocked duct three times!!! As everyone else mentioned: hot showers, continue to nurse on that side, hot packs...but I finally figured out the reason I was getting them was my underwire nursing bra! I switched to a non-underwire nursing bra and didn't have any other problems! If you do underwire or tight nursing bra, try something loser (even a nursing cami). Ugh, those blocked ducts are painful!

Thank you everyone! I think I've gotten the knot out. I had a slight increase of milk production. So we'll see if it continues to get better or not.

I took a long hot shower massaged the know for a little while and then placed a hand on either side of my breast and squeezed, milk squirted clear across the shower. I had to do this a few times with my first child because I had so much milk.

Make sure you alternate nursing positions (cradle hold then football hold, etc) so that you thoroughly empty all the ducts. I got tons of clogs in the beginning when I had to use the shield. Always start baby on the clogged side because they are more hungry and will suck better at the beginning of the feed. Heat the area before and during nursing. Point baby's nose at the clog, this focuses their strongest suction on that ducts. Gently massage while nursing. It it's stubborn and won't come out then try laying baby on the bed and leaning over them to nurse. This will use gravity to help get the clog out. Many moms notice a slight decrease in supply in the breast that has the clog, but don't worry when you get it out you supply will bounce right back. You shouldn't notice any supply issues with the opposite breast due to a clog. Good luck!

lol no just that it puts your baby to sleep faster. and you have peace n quiet.
also you can increase your water intake and empty your breast when feeding or pumping.

continue to feed on the blocked side first, hot showers, massage your breast where the knot is. if it doesnt drain and get unblocked you get mastitis. very painful and you have to go to the doctor for meds. no fun. try pumping as often as possible and feed on that breast as much as possible. hot packs can also work to loosen it up. drink and eat lots of dairy products healthy dairy products yogurts cheese milk to help replenish your milk supply. It does not effect the other side. I was not able to unplug it and i got mastitis. i have educated myself on this since having my first child and it has not happened since then. good luck and i am sorry.
