Bumbo Chairs

I just bought one for my 4 mo. old. She loves it, but her legs are pretty chunky and it is kind of hard to get her in and out of it. I'm not sure how much longer she will be able to use it, in less her little legs slim down soon. They are pretty spendy! I had a hard time justifying buying one till she sat in a friend's Bumbo. She loved it so much I had to get one!

My little girl is 5 months and 17 pounds... she is to fat for it. I love her little rolls but the bumbo just doesn't work. It also doesn't really help them learn to sit up because it supports them to the extent that it doesn't let them move form side to side or front to back.

I got one for my daughter when she was about 5 months old and now use it for my 6 month old son too and my 2 yr old daughter who weighs 33lbs still likes to sit in it. Also, it works really well as a travel highchair for feeding babies. We took it with us when we went to visit my husbands family who lives by Calgary, AB and when we went to Sicamous, BC to visit some friends. It is also designed to help babies learn how to sit up by themselves as it helps strengthen their backs. Also, you can buy trays for it as well. I agree with other moms on checking the consignment stores for one as its cheaper than buying them new as its around $60 from babysrus/toysrus. I got mine from a local drugstore for about $40 to $50 and a tray for $25.
It also is a good tool to have if you do any camping.

i got one for my son but when he started crawling it kind of became useless cause he would just crawl right out of it i would suggest getting the fisher price space saver high chair my son loves to sit in it . in fact thats the chair he sits in outside

I see I'm kind of late to respond here, but I thought I'd share that I've used a bumbo for 2 babies, both of which had too big of thighs to sit comfortably. Neither baby was "chubby" much less obese, just big thighed. The chair left really bad red marks on baby's skin. No good.

not worth it i got mine for $20 and was done with it in a month cuz my lil girl learned how to crawl out of it when i neeed her to sit and play for a min while i wash dishes or something i put her in an exersaucer and she enjoys it way more than the bumbo

We had a bumbo seat for our youngest i bought it at mothercare for about £25.00. He was only in it for a couple of months as he liked to push backwards in it ( we always had it on the floor so he couldn't hurt himself) then we gave it to my sister and she's using it for her little one and she also has a girl of 4 1/2 months now so hopefully it should be used again but yes they are really useful for travelling as we also used ours in the caravan for holidays hope this helps

Don't bother, they're 100 bucks and your baby will be sitting up by himself soon anyway. My kid is 8 months and I still use ours to feed him in and he rocks back and forth and nearly can get out of it, so it's getting kind of obsolete.

I loved my bumbo chairs but be forewarned that they can't use them for very long. Everyone I know who has one said their baby squirmed its way out of it. Mine did at 7.5 months. So don't put them on counter tops unsupervised (or at all if the baby is older).

IT SAYS ON THE INSERT ONLY 15MIN AT A TIME!!! I returned the one someone gave us. You can't leave them unattended parentsI Never to use any elevated surfaces. Also it says not to use as a booster seat or feeding seat. Most people are misusing this product. There was a recall on them to revise the insert wiith new warnings because several children fell out and were seriously hurt. TWO MONTH OLD flipped off the counter bumbo seat and sustained a skull fracture, requiring a head CT. I would let baby learn to sit upright on baby's own. There's a reason for the spinal development progression. I wouldn't rush it. Maybe go with an activity chair instead. I never used a Bumbo because it doesn't really help them to learn how to sit on their own. What I did was sit him up and then put the Boppy pillow (breastfeeding pillow) around his legs.
Read this thread, maybe it will give you some insight into the Bumbo - there are comments from Physical therapists, chiropractors and an Occupational Therapist. People who all know what they're talking about from a medical/bioligical standpoint.

I received the Bumbo and tray as shower gifts and wasn't sure we would use it, but I am SO glad someone gave them to us because it has been a great help. We started putting our son in it when he was about 5 months old--he is 14 months now and I still use it occasionally when we're traveling. We live about 2 1/2 hours from any family so its much easier to take it than a highchair. Plus, I am a pianist, so I've been able to put him in it beside me during rehearsals and he's content. Once he was more mobile he didn't really want to hang out as much in it and if I didn't have the tray on he could have gotten out, but for feeding purposing and traveling I think it's great. There are certain things I wouldn't buy 2nd hand, but a Bumbo should be fine, and if you can find a good deal on one that's great, but even brand new you can get them @ Wal-Mart for $35, which I don't think is bad. they're good for a bit. when he can't fit, he'll stop using it. i like them b/c they're on the floor, they can't really fall, just topple out.

I have twin boys and they loved them - I got them when they were a couple of months old - getting them used to sitting up and then found them really great to feed them in, I used them until they couldnt fit in them anymore and then resold them on ebay as they were still in perfect condition - definately well worth the money i paid for them - bought off ebay and sold on ebay for almost the same as I originally paid for them, they are pretty sturdy and stand up to alot of rough use.

I bet you won't use that Bumbo more than a couple months. My son is 7 months old and he is sitting up well now. My little one won't sit still. I know that if I had a Bumbo now for him, he would not stay put. He is crawling and on the move. When he was learning to sit up, we just put stuffed animals & pillows around him in case he would fall.

My 10 month old is that exact weight and she sits in it still. She climbs out but still can sit in it.

I used it in the bathroom, so I could put her down without worrying about placing her on a dirty floor.

This is a great seat!! Bought one for my 1st and am still using it. One of the best things to use it for is when they get a haircut you put it on the barbers booster and they cannot move and it's so much easier than getting hair all over yourself. Size matters with their thighs. My 3 1/2 yr old is skinny and he still fits in it. and my 1 yr old has big thighs and it's snug but works. This is the greatest invention ever! Their only $20 new. No need to get used. Kinda gross. Check one step ahead 1st then maybe trus

The bumbo was great until my little ones thighs got too big. She was about 5 months when I put her in it and has trouble getting her out. We also had a bebe pod that we got from a friend, the leg holes are slightly larger on it. The bumbos are great if your kid can still fit in it lol

We loved ours! My sister-in-law gave me hers and we used it for our youngest when she was about 5 months old until she could crawl herself out of one which was at about 7 months. It was the greatest thing to have her sitting up next to me while I was cleaning or working. She really liked it. Much better than the boppy pillow in my opinion. :) Good Luck!

I loved it for my son - he did it at like 6 months - probably about that weight. He would sit in it about 10 to 15 min at a time (is that what you are asking?) or are you wondering for how long you will be able to use it? Until he starts really sitting on his own - so probably only a few months. But it really helps. I'd get the tray with it - they didn't have those yet when we got ours and I used a pillow type thing as a tray - when he was about a year they came out with the tray and I said "I always said I'd wanted a tray..."

my son was in a Bumbo Chair which we borrowed at the time because he grew out of it quickly. what I suggest is if you know anyone who has one that had children... ask to borrow it for the time he needs it...time moves quickly. so any way you can save while someone isn't using it would be good for both parties... they got their money's worth & helped a friend and you save for outher important things for the baby!

I just bought a Bumbo chair for my 3 month old son. I heard good things about it and so far he seems to like it. I like it because it really does help him sit up and see things from a different point of view. I bought mine at BJ's Wholesale Club. It was the cheapest I could find one. It cost $29.99. It did not come with the tray.

My son was about 5 months when I bought it and he loved it but only for about a month and then he started crawling and wanted to be more active and didn't like just sitting. So for our next child if I use it again I'll use it much earlier around 2 or 3 months, as soon as they can hold their own head up.

I used mine when he was 2 months old and a gf of mine put her baby in hers at 2 weeks. My son still can't sit up on his own and 6 months so he still sits in his. I got the try for mine so we use it as a high chair as well. My son is 14 pounds and still seems to have a lot of room to grow in it.

I would use it anytime...They are great for when you are in the kitchen you put baby in it with a toy and you always know where they are =) I used it at restaurants and put him in his bumbo in a chair....I used it at Christmas and holidays with out little one...He loved his chaair...He also played video games with daddy in it =) You can use it as a portable highchair too and its a lot smaller and not as heavy to take along than a highchair.


Sometimes you can find them for free through craigslist or freecycle.org. Thats how I got mine.


His weight is fine for it. I dont think you would regret getting one...I actually have two, one in the car to take where we go and one at home =)

I just have to say i had never heard of a 'bumbo seat', so i googled it! hahaha! I just realized she had been sitting in one for almost 2 mths at daycare and had no idea it was called that!
BTW she is 10 mths old now and they feed her in one everyday because she is still too small for a high chair.

My daughter had a bumbo at about 2 or 3 months and she hated it! She was sitting by herself at 4 months anyways.
6 months is kind of late to get one really... But if you must get a 2nd hand one

we stopped using ours when our son arched backwards at 6 months and fell out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE keep and eye on your baby in these! i DO NOT TRUST THEM

I put my son in one as early as 4 months i believe it was and Im not completely sure about the weight issue but when i knew it was time to pass my sons down to my cousins baby was when he could twist his way out of it and try to crawl away from me :] They are a great investment especially when you need to get something done really quick or even for feeding its great. It also helps them with their back support and can teach them how to sit up!

My daughter is 9 Months old and she gets stuck in the chair and she is 20 lbs. she has chubby legs so they get stuck besides that the seat is great.. But def. look to buy one used they are expensive for a seat.

We got a Bumbo seat for my daughter when she was around that age. Her legs were pretty chunky, so it was a little difficult getting her in & out of it, but it worked well in enabling her to sit up. I think you can leave your son in it as long as he wants to be there. You'll probably find that he'll get bored with it, & he'll let you know when he's ready to get out. Also, my daughter LOVES to play with the seat now, & she's 17 months old. She's over 24 pounds, but her legs are much thinner now, so she can get in & out of it easily on her own. It's a great thing to have--especially with the little tray.

My kids liked their bumbo chair. They actually still sat in it until I got rid of it right before we found out we were pregnant with another child! I thought it would be a waste of money on something they would use for a couple of months but they thought it was funny to sit in it all the time.

mate, by that age, he will probably be just about learning to sit up by himself, so I'd save my money. The Bumbo was designed for little babies, who had head control, but couldn't sit on their own yet, in hospitals and care facilities, so they didn't have to lie in their beds all day staring at the ceiling.

For a healthy kid at home, don't bother, there are other options. I used a boomerang style pillow behind Charlotte, but she could sit by herself at 4.5 mths. You can get some yoga mats, or a quilt for him to sit on, and some throw cushions to scatter around him to soften the fall if you need to

Of course a kid is going to like being sat up, so he can see around, but I wouldn't bother spending the money for about a month's worth of use. He'll be sitting, and crawling before you know it and you'll be stuck with this thing that wasn't even designed for household use, just marketed as such to make the manufacturers more money from Mums.

Kenny started sitting in his around 3 months, but he could hold his head well since 2 weeks. We used it until almost 6 months when we moved and couldn't take it with us. He might still use it now
(9 months) if we had one.

I think I started using a bumbo when my son was around 4-5 months old or something. I used to put it in the bathroom while I took a shower so he could sit & I could keep checking on him. When he got to be about 8-9 months old, he figured out how to crawl out of the thing lol. I can't use it anymore, because he just won't stay in it...he's 12 months old now. But, it was great while it lasted!

well...my oldest is 25 lbs @ 3 yrs old and she still fits in one...i love it. My girls would sit in it beside Daddy while he played video games... my 18 month old still sits in it just because she likes it. she weighs 21 lbs so they last for a long time.

My son loved his bumbo! We started him in it around 6 months but we could have started at 5 months. He would probably still use it today, if he could fit. I bought ours brand new but check out baby consignment stores - I saw one for $15 and it was new in box! They are fantastic! We travelled with ours too, took it to the cottage, the beach - it is great! He used it until he was almost 1 yr old.
