Lol, so I am looking for a seat for my son, ive decided on a sunshine kids radian xtsl, and I was looking through their web site and saw the Monterey car seat.

It goes to 63inches and 120lbs!

I am actually 63inches or 5ft 3inches, and I weigh 115lbs!

I'm so amused to find a seat I could be in still!

I'm all for safety, but if your kid is still within the limits, what age would you say enough enough? Cuz I'd be in a seat my whole life till now.

Except while I was preggo.

Isn't it funny! I had a good laugh.

Here's the link, it looks like an awesome seat btw :)

Btw I think I should add, I'm what you could call a 'radical car seat safety mom'. Meaning the reason I'm buying a sunshine xtsl is because it will let my son stay rear facing until 45lbs and then forward facing in a 5point harness until 80lbs or 53inches.

So I'm about as extreme as it gets, but should a small pre teen, or teenaged child still be in a seat if they are within the limit???

Cindy you can show your friend this page! It's about as best advise you can get, as the whole web site is all about car safety

Awesome about the height on those seats...little one is already 32"... My friend thinks I should forward face him now.... but I always thought rear facing was safer....

I highly recommend the sunshine kids radian car seats which can stay rear facing until 45lbs! Keep that baby rear facing as long as possible!
My son is also 30lbs and still rear facing, his current seat goes to 35lbs rear but I'm buying a sunshine kids radian soon cuz he is getting too tall for his seat, radians go until 53inches rear facing so it's awesome for big kids!

Good question and good point. And that's hilarious that you would fit into the seat.... Now I'm going to look into this.... My child is almost 8.... But I have 2 others little ones and my 12 month old is now over 30lbs...

I am glad that there are car seats available for bigger/taller kids/people. There are mentally/physically handicapped individuals who greatly benefit from these devices that make riding in a vehicle safe and secure, when they cannot control themselves to sit correctly. As far as kids in general and use of car seats. The young ones sit in carseats according to weight/height, etc.

I will use a booster for the older kids until they are too old, or tall enough for the seat belt to sit where it should lay across shoulder and hip. Why don't the car companies come up with an adjustable seat belt system?

This way we could make sure the belts lay across whomever correctly, no matter where we sit. Of course my kids are not sitting in the front seat until 12 years old at least.

I think size-wise, my son (3) will be out of his car seat before my daughter (5). She's a tiny little thing and he's a linebacker. I intend on keeping them in carseats\boosters as long as possible. If either of them have my height, they will always be uncomfortable in cars. Even with the adjustable shoulder, the seat belt sits half up my neck rather than across my shoulder =\

We used to kid around with a former co-worker of mine. She's in her early 50's but about 4'8, pushing 95 lbs.

embarrssed, is a hard thing to feel, but a quick reminder to the child that the seat could kep them from being dead or paralyzed and i bet any child will come around to see that risking their life isnt worth it!
helmet on a bike isnt 'cool' either but its such a life saver... really, being safe isnt seen as 'cool' but we cant risk our kids lives just for their popularity status right!

lol. I'm 5' and could fit in it too. that's crazy...In CA i think the age for a child to not have to be in a carseat is 9 and 4'3" or something like that. i just moved to IA ...wonder what it is here. My friend's daughter didnt hit the age/height/weight requirements at the same time (she was a little one) and ended up in a safety seat until 11. She was the only one in her class....it was a booster but still, she was embarrased. But, she was smaller than most and in my opinion should have been using her booster. she wasnt at the weight or hight requirement but was over 9...

then why does the company specificly say it is for up to 63 inches? they cant just pull a number out of thin air, its a number that they have determined is the limit for the saet they designed.

The 63 inch height limit is actually not really reasonable for that particular seat. Most kids are actually going to be physically too tall for the backrest pretty close the the recommended 4'9" {57"} height for fitting the adult seat belt properly

*proper fit means the child can sit all the way back in the vehicle seat without having to slouch to bend their knees, with the seat belt on the shoulder and the bony structure of the hips rather than on the soft tissue of the belly*

While state laws differ in enforcing which size/age/height children are required to benefit from car seats, an improperly fitting seat belt, specifically the lap portion of the belt on the belly instead of the hips, results in spinal cord and organ injury.

HAHA that's funny I had no idea they made them for such tall kids! (or people I guess) My question would be...when you are in the seat is your seatbelt properly placed? I don't think it's really necessary at 120 pounds...But on the other hand perhaps it is safer? Good question!!! Let me know what you find out!

Sorry Candi! I understand you completely now :)
Unfortunately I assumed your wording to mean you thought like many of my family members who think car seats are just a bother and kids are safe without them cuz their generation didn't use seats and they survived.
I try to explain to them that although they did survive the kids who died aren't here to say so! My family is weird.
Sorry for the assumption!

i think i understood the can get out of their seats as a point that young kids are often capable of undoing their own seatbelts, i have 5 wonderful children and they are all capable of sitting in child restraints however the car i have means that my eldest(8) is not able to due to the lack of space to fit one in, the seat we bought for my 4th will seat her until she is at least 9 and that might sound extreme to some but she is quite small and my children are my world so therefore as long as i can safely and comfortably carry my children in car seats i will, (with so many in the car i believe that keeping the 2 youngest in seats till no 4 is 9 would be very unsafe and uncomfortable for my eldest who would be14 by then, followed by a 12 y.o and an 11 y.o) but while i can i will!

No Laura, I have never seen carseats as a bother. You are reading my message completely wrong. I am just saying, it was legal for them to ride in a normal seat of a car at the age of 5. Is that better? My oldest daughter enjoyed her carseat and chose to ride in it even after she turned 5. My youngest is now 5 and as soon as we get in the car, she hops right in her seat and attempts to buckle herself in. Its a 5 pt harness, so she has trouble, so of course we help her!! If we are in the car, the kids are buckled and the youngest is in her seat. My older 2 are 10 and 11, so they are not in a carseat. My son is my height and my oldest daughter is almost 5 ft tall, so they do not need a carseat...hold on, they are too large for a carseat, therefor, they sit in the normal seat of the car. Not in the front seat either. That is not allowed until they are at least 12. Those are my rules. I do have a car that automatically turns the passenger air bag off when someone light sits there, so its not too dangerous. Sorry if my post disturbed you. I would never see a safety device for my kids as a hassle or a bother.

Candi, it worries me when I hear you say, "able to get out of carseats" like car seats are a bother, or something you have to just deal with.
Kids die in cars all the time, and car seats are their hope of surviving.
There is no age where it's safer to ride forward facing, there's no age where it's safer to be out of a 5 point harness, there's no age where it's safer to be out of a carseat.
It's just the wording, but I feel the way you are looking at carseats is very unsafe for your kids!
The law is the bare minimum, just cuz it's legal doesnt make it safe, after all cigarettes are legal right?
Try to think about car seats as your Childs life line!

When we lived in TX, my kids were able to get out of their carseats at 5 yrs old. When we moved to VA, we were thinking our youngest would only be in her carseat another year until we went to the Pediatrician's office and saw the new notice that kids must remain in carseats until age 7. There are height restrictions too, but If my daughter is like me, she will reach the age before the height! lol. I am only 5'2 and on a good day I can tip the scales at 100 pounds. As for the size 7 diapers, I saw those in Texas. I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing it correctly. I don't remember what store, but I was shocked. They may have been those GoodNight diapers for older kids that wet the bed.

In Wisconsin they have to be in a carseat until they are 4 and a booster until they are 8 or until they are either 4'0" or 80 pounds.

The bigger carseats are made to accomodate children with special needs who may not have the physical control over their body to properly sit in a car with only the seatbelt around them. They also make diapers up through adult sizes, we just do not commonly see them in stores because of privacy and modesty issues for individuals who need to use them.

So not to be rude, but it's really not something to laugh about since there are individuals who require them due to physical or mental disabilities.

And Candi...where do you live that they sell size 7 diapers??? I'm just curious. My son's fine in his size 6 but I've honestly never heard of a 7!

In the USA, when a child reaches 4'9" they no longer have to ride in a car seat. Not sure where you live Laura but here you would be safe. lol! I couldn't do it because I'm 5'7" and WAY over the weight limit! wow! I wish I could be as small as you!

WOW! What a car seat! Will it even fit in the car?Maybe they make them so large b/c kids seem so much larger these days. I mean, they make diapers up to size 7! I am a stickler for carseats too. My 5 yr old still rides in hers. They have to til age 7 here, so she is in it no matter where we go!! I think once a kids reaches a certain age, they can get out of the car seat no matter their size. When we lived in Germany, kids had to be 48 inches or 12 yrs old to get out of the carseat! I'm sure its lower in the US. Like I said, in VA its 7 yrs old.
