Cleaning up bedwetting?

My little girl is doing great with potty training during the daytime, and I know accidents are totally to be expected so I'm starting to learn what to do and not do to prevent bedwetting and try to minimize the damage, (like no liquids an hour before bed, making sure she goes to the bathroom before bed, plastic mattress protectors, etc.) BUT my husband and I have learned all this through trial and error and our bed has suffered greatly. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING!!! Our 1500 dollar mattress is now a very disgusting urine sponge that no matter how much I try to clean still smells like urine and embarrassingly has stains covering every inch of it....Please, any cleaning suggestions that might work????

I use simple green solution in a steam cleaner, then dry the mattress in the sun (at least 6 hours) then sprinkle baking soda on the mattress before I put the plastic cover back on. I also try to keep a plastic cover on the bed and a chux (it's a plastic backed pad that I got from a med supply store) under the fitted sheet to help keep the floor from getting wet.
~Hope this helps!

I'm sorry I don't have any cleaning suggestions to post as i've never had to, but i'm just thinking that maybe she is not ready to be trained at night. I have heard that some kids wet the bed til they are 9 or 10 because the bladder is just not strong enough yet. She might need to continue wearing diapers or pull ups at night (for now at least). Not saying to have her wear diapers or pull ups at age 9, but to help for now until her bladder is stronger and there is less cleaning for you....just a suggestion.

Try laying the mattress out in the sun for a day. This seriously works! Not only will it lighten the stain (the sun is, afterall, a natural bleaching agent!) but it will take huge amounts of the smell out as well! I suggest laying down a blanket larger than the mattress first, then the mattress on top. Don't use a tarp, if ANY moisture still remains in the mattress of somehow gets on the tarp, it just pools and gets absorbed by the mattress, not very productive! Best of luck!

P.S. If you have trouble with your LO wetting the bed multiple times a night I suggest layering! A mattress protector, sheet, another mattress protector, another sheet, I do a third layer as well. This way, when she wets through the second or even third time, I just take off the wet sheet and protector and I don't have to remake the bed all over again in the middle of the night OR risk further staining a mattress.

To remove urine stains from a mattress, try the hydrogen peroxide method. You can also try using white vinegar. If you attempt to clean the spot with white vinegar, treat the stain with the same method as the peroxide, blot the stain with a towel from the outside of the stain to the inside of the stain until it is removed.

Because urine may seep further into the mattress, make sure you cover the freshly cleaned area with baking soda to neutralize the odor and leave the baking soda on the damp area overnight. The next day vacuum the baking soda off the mattress. To further remove the odor you may want to put a couple of drying sheets on the mattress before putting the bedding back on.

white vinegar neutralizes the ammonia in urine.. put some in the steam cleaner? i also put about a 1/2 cup in our washer with every load, especially the nasty ones. comes out clean and fresh. no vinegar smell either.
