This is really bothering me but my little guy (18 mo) seems to have some delays in communication. he isn't really verbal..he says a few words but hardly ever in the correct context and doesn't really understand a lot of simple direction. I feel like at times, he's just ignoring me or bored with me (SAHM) but then other times I truly think he has no idea what I am saying. We had him screened for autism and he passed the screening but they did say he was delayed in communication but advanced in motor skills and cognitive development so he isn't "slow or unintelligent" its just communication. Another interesting thing I have found is that he dislikes coloring and playdough but is really impressive when it comes to music. sometimes i just watch him in awe when he tries to play "twinkle twinkle little star" on his keyboard.and it seems to me there may be a link between speech delay and a disliking things like coloring. just in the past 2 days I've seen 4 instances of that combination of quirks. anyone else having issues like this and have any insight?

Have you had his hearing tested? Has he had a lot of ear infections during infancy? Try doing "Sign 2 Me Baby" with him... it's sign language.
My daughter had chronic ear infections from 3ms-12ms! She had her second set of bilateral ear tubes at about 9ms. Her ENT told me her hearing was like if your head was buried under a large pile of heavy pillows! I thought she was being sassy and ignoring me or possible communication issue, but it was that she could not hear properly.

Ask your pediatrician for an Occupational Therapy referral. My daughter had a strange little coping behavior from the time she was very small. I also wondered, at times, about her hearing. I kept after the pediatrician until he decided to have her checked out. She's got a mild sound processing issue, mild motor issues, and mild sensory issues. All of these have been addressed and improved greatly. She is also quite bright. An OT can give you lots of ideas and resources to help you. There are also workshops for parents dealing with various issues offered through school districts or therapy centers. Good luck!

He is really young to get evaluated and get a clear answer. My son had simillar issues and they refused an evaluation until he was 2 yrs old. It was determined he had a speech and communication delay and he started therapy right away which has worked wonders. He is still in it (3 1/2 yrs old now) and caught up.

It could just be his personality, but I would definatly seek another opinion. I had a friend who's child was like that. She had his hearing checked multiple times, and he was also tested for Autism. After several months they finally diagnosed him with Aspergers syndrome. It is in the same lines as autism, but the children are very high functioning.
